Sri Lanka in tough group for Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship

Sri Lanka has been drawn in group C alongside the two powerhouses Japan and Korea in the 19th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship 2017 to be held in Surabaya, Indonesia.

A total of 16 teams will take part in the championship from July 24th to August 1st.

Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation has picked the final 12 player squad for the Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball…

The draw was done by the Asian Volleyball Confederation at Dusit Princess Srinakarin Hotel. Dr Eom Han-Joo, Chairman of the AVC Sports Events Council, presided over the drawing of lots ceremony, while Mr Somporn Chaibangyang, President of the Thailand Volleyball Association, was guest of honour to deliver a welcome address to all participants.

“With eight major tournaments being held by the AVC this year, I’m convinced this will help promote volleyball across the continent and in Thailand in particular. As the AVC Headquarters is located in Bangkok, we (TVA) are very happy and honoured to be part of the AVC. We will throw our strong support behind the governing body in order that they will gain more achievements in whatever campaign in the near future,” Somporn said in his speech.

Japan are the defending Asian Men’s Volleyball Champions. They have won the gold medal on 8 occasions with 3 silver and 3 bronze medals. Though South Korea finished 7th in the last championship they have won gold and silver 4 times each and bronze 8 times. Japan are currently world ranked 14th while Korea are ranked 22nd.

Pool A – Indonesia, Qatar, Kazakhstan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Pool B – Iran, Chinese Taipei, Pakistan, Iraq

Pool C – Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Sri Lanka

Pool D – Australia, China, Thailand, Hong Kong
