Left-arm spinner Amila Aponso has been added to the Sri Lanka ODI squad for the first two games against Zimbabwe in Galle.

With Aponso’s inclusion, the current squad is extended to 14 players and skipper Angelo Mathews will have three frontline spinners to choose from.

“All three spinners I have, Amila Aponso, Lakshan Sandakan and Akila Dananjaya are very quality spinners. We will take a look at the pitch tomorrow morning and take a call on who will play.” Mathews said at the pre-match press conference.

Aponso, who debuted against Australia last year, played all the five matches against the Aussies and captured 7 wickets at an average of 25.85. Aponso is known as a tidy, accurate customer and his economy-rate of 4.17 in that series stood out from the rest. Despite this stellar performance, Aponso was left out of the 4 subsequent ODI series’ played by Sri Lanka for reasons unknown.

Since his debut in August last year, Aponso represented Sri Lanka A and Sri Lanka Emerging XI earlier this year. 24-year old Aponso is a former St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa captain and a current representative from Ragama Cricket Club who has taken 162 first-class wickets and 52 List A scalps.
