The second day of the 50th Schools Nationals U:19 Hockey tournament ended today after some hard fought matches played at the Colombo Astro turf and St. Peters College grounds.
As the day started, Girls’ Kandy White team scored 4 goals to Gampaha team in the Group ‘B’. The next match was the deciding match in the group ‘B’ which was contested between Colombo Reds and Gampaha. It was an important match for Colombo Reds as they needed a higher goal margin score to become the group champions.
The Reds secured victory scoring 14 goals to Gampaha team. In group ‘A’ the match between Kandy Girls’ Blue team and Jaffna team ended as 6-1 with the Kandy Blue Girls’ team qualifying for semi-finals. The match between Colombo Girls’ Blues and Matale Gold ended as a nil all draw but Colombo Girls’ Red team scored 13 goals to Matale Maroons in the final group ‘B’ match. Colombo Girls’ Red team made it to semi-finals by being the group champions. The girl’s runners- up teams in the group ‘A’ and ‘B’ were Matale Gold and Kaluthara respectively.
In the Boys’ quarter finals both Colombo Red and Colombo Blue made it to semi-finals after some tough tussles. The first boys quarter final was between Colombo Reds and Galle Gold and it ended as 1-1. Thereafter a plenty shoot out had to settle the score and the Colombo Reds won the match with the final penalty score reading 2-1.
The second boys quarter finals ended as 6-1 which took place between Colombo Blues and Kandy Whites. The most exciting boys quarter finals was competed between Gampaha and Kandy blues and as the time ended the score was 2-2 but Gampaha team was lucky enough to get into semi-finals after the penalty shoot-out ending 3-2. The last match of the day was boys quarter final match between Matale Gold and Puttalam OHC and the match ended as 3-2 for Matale Gold getting them in to the semi-final round.
The 4 girls’ teams that is qualified for the semi-final round were Kandy Blues, Colombo Reds, Kaluthara and Matale Gold. In the boys’ category Colombo Blues, Colombo Reds, Matale Gold and Gampaha will compete in the semi-final round tomorrow at Colombo Astro turf.
