“We will have a final verdict today in the evening. He is currently being assessed by the ICC doctors so if he is unfit to take part in the remaining games, we will make a request to the ICC to include Danushka Gunathilaka. This is the main reason why we brought two more players along with the main touring party.“  Sri Lanka team manager, Asanka Gurusinha told ThePapare.com exclusively.

The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the replacement player can be officially added to the squad. If the ICC Technical Committee approves this change, Danushka Gunathilaka will slot straight into the playing XI with Kusal Janith Perera being retained in the middle order. Gunathilaka has played 19 ODIs for Sri Lanka and last played against Bangladesh in the recent three-match ODI series at home with scores of 0, 9 and 34. Gunathilaka is a versatile fielder at any position and will provide a much-needed spin bowling option as well.

With plenty of grass left on the playing surface at The Oval grounds, Sri Lanka is pondering whether to play an extra seamer in place of leg-spinner Seekkuge Prasanna but that decision will be taken tomorrow morning prior to the game. Thisara Perera is the most likely contender to become the fourth seamer given his late order batting prowess as well.

There is a little bit of grass, but I don’t really know, as of now, how the wicket may play. If the sun comes out, it might be a different case. There is a little bit of grass on the wicket as of now, but still there is a little bit of time, and we don’t know whether they’re going to cut the grass or not.” Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews said at the pre-match press conference.

Angelo Mathews talks about his fitness and Sri Lanka’s slow over rate

Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews speaks exclusively to ThePapare.com about his fitness and ability to play in the Indian game and about Sri Lanka’s slow over rate…

Chaos stirred in the Sri Lankan camp last Saturday after their 96-run loss against South Africa when in-form opening batsman and stand-in skipper Upul Tharanga was suspended by the ICC for two matches after a serious over-rate breach. Angelo Mathews stressed that the over-rate issues will not happen again, “I call it pathetic because of the whole team, and the captain was warned several times, and there’s no excuse at all but to take responsibility for that because nobody else can take responsibility on it. The whole team is responsible, including the captain. You see most of the teams playing with four seamers, and they have not had an issue. So we played only three, and we’ve had an issue. So that has been addressed, and it will not happen again.” He said.
