Dambulla and Galle kept their hopes alive of making the final in the SLC Super Provincial Limited Over Tournament when both teams comfortably registered their second win on Monday against Colombo and Kandy respectively.
Dambulla vs Colombo
BRC batsman Bhanuka Rajapaksa slammed a superlative ton for Dambulla as they stunned Colombo by 44 runs at Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium.
After opting to bat first on home turf, Kusal Mendis fell in the very first ball he faced as Sachithra Senanayake struck early. Since then, Dambulla top order continued to dominate the Colombo bowlers. Skipper Kusal Janith made a 50-ball 32 with 5 fours while Rajapaksa and Ashan Priyanjan shared 155 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Sri Lanka’s history at the ICC Champions Trophy
The ICC Champions trophy has been a happy hunting ground for the Sri Lankans in the past, but with the recent loss of form and stalwarts like Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Snagakkara and TM Dilshan, Sri Lanka will face a daunting task at this year’s tournament.
Left-handed Rajapaksa stroked elegant 10 fours and 3 huge sixes while Priyanjan’s 65-ball 70 comprised 7 fours and a six. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Milinda Siriwardena provided the late impetus to the Dambulla innings with a cracking 68 off just 41 balls with 10 fours and a six. For the visitors, Shehan Jayasuriya bowled his full quota of 10 overs for just 29 runs and captured 4 wickets as Dambulla posted a commanding 316 for 8.
Colombo in their chase of 317 got off to a cracking start as former Nalandians, Nipun Karunanayake and hard-hitting batsman Dilshan Munaweera added 112 runs in 17 overs for the first wicket before Munaweera departed for 85 off 57 balls with 14 fours and 1 six. Karunanayake fell shortly and Colombo’s strong middle order faltered.

Skipper Dinesh Chandimal anchored the innings with a scintillating 70 off 84 balls and his innings had only 3 fours and 1 six. Colombo made only 272 all out as fast-bowler Asitha Fernando and off-spinner Ashan Priyanjan grabbed 4 wickets each for the winning team.
