Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa has made a return to the A division segment of the schools Rugby league after a lapse of 8 years having last being a part of the top tier in 2009.

This year the Cambrians field a very young outfit which includes 5 U-16 players and are determined to remain in the top league at the end of the season and provide the youngsters a platform to excel in the coming years.
Blast from the past
Cricket is the most popular sport at Prince of Wales. Cambrians have gifted talented cricketers to the national fold and Rugby takes a back seat at the Cricket crazy school in Moratuwa. Having taken up the oval shaped ball game in 1979 Cambrians first emerged in the 7s format and joined the league the following year in 1980. Udaya Sanjula represented the country with the junior national team at the Rugby ASIAD last year and is testament to the potential and the talent at Prince of Wales.
Last year
The 2016 season saw Prince of Wales ending the league as the runners up of the B division segment, they entered the top fold under controversial circumstances as they were placed 13th in the overall standing but were picked to play in the top league. Cambrians were captained by Neshaka Prasanjana and saw 10of their senior players leave the team at the end of the year.
Players to watch out for
Primesh Perera: Cambrian Skipper, Primesh is a nippy scrum half who is playing his 4th and final year of 1st XV rugby for Prince of Wales. Having gathered valuable experience during the last three years sharpening his skills as a half back, Primesh will be hoping to play a pivotal role as the skipper of the side and the chief decision maker.
Thisara Divanka: The deputy of the team Thisara is the man at the back of the scrum and will be leading the forwards to the battle. Known for his fierce tackles and spotting the gaps in open play Thisara will be looking to provide good clean ball to his speedy backs.
Heshan Thilakarathne: At 6’1 and weighing over 80kg Heshan is the largest man on the POW team this year. A utility forward who is able to fit in to lock or the third-row, Heshan is a strong ball carrier and will be looking to gain important yards for the Cambrians this season.
Jehan De Silva: De Silva will be playing his 3rd and the final year for the Moratuwa outfit as a center and has earned a name for himself as a destructive runner with an elusive step that can confuse the opposition defence.
Nalin Tharanga: Tharanga is another senior player who will play his last year for the Cambrians. Playing as the fullback of the team, a lot will depend on his defensive capabilities as the last line of defence. Tharanga is also the go to kicker of the side and will hope to make a difference in the closely fought games.
Coaching staff
The Cambrians are coached by their longstanding coach Mr. Chandralal Samarakoon. He has been the sole dedicated livewire of Prince of Wales Rugby and has made it his life’s mission to make sure the Cambrians become challenging mainstays in the top division.
