Adam Voges, Australian batsman, announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday (February 14). The 37-year-old, who will lead the Prime Minister’s XI in the upcoming tour match against the visiting Sri Lankan side in Canberra, views the game as his last against an international side.
“This will be it for me,” Voges said. “I’m certainly looking forward to getting out there and playing this game. I’ve had an amazing couple of years with Australia with the Test team and I’ve loved every minute of it. I see this as a last opportunity to play against an international team and I’m certainly looking forward to that.”
The 37-year old, who made his debut only in 2015, got off to a spectacular start in Test cricket, averaging 95.50 after the first 15 Tests. However, the numbers dropped drastically following a poor series in Sri Lanka where Australia were whitewashed 3-0 and he managed to accumulate only 118 runs in six innings.
Voges, who has not played a Test since suffering a concussion during a Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania last November, was left out of the Australia squad for India series after a poor run in South Africa series. After he was injured, his place in the side was taken by Peter Handscomb, who made a fine half century on debut and cemented his spot.
The Western Australia batsman has played 20 Tests, scoring 1485 runs at an average of 61.87 – second highest average in Tests after Don Bradman (Among batsmen who have played at least 20 Tests). He has also figured in 31 One-Day Internationals (ave 45.78) and seven Twenty20 Internationals (ave 46.33).
