Here’s a round up of Super 8 and Plate Championship matches which kicked off today in the SLC Tier A Premier League.

Super 8

Chilaw Marians vs CCC

A total of 15 wickets fell on day 1 in the match between Chilaw Marians and CCC at Surrey Village grounds. CCC won the toss and elected to field first. Chilaw were restricted for 3 for 20 but Shehan Jayasuriya and Maduka Liyanapathiranage got together and consolidated for them. Maduka top scored with 40 runs and after his dismissal there was another collapse. Thanks to two valuable cameos by Rukshan Shehan and Malinda Pushpakumara Chilaw managed to post 213. Lahiru Gamage bagged 4 for 65.

CCC had the upper hand but Chilaw bowlers kept on taking wickets which kept CCC at bay. At stumps, CCC were 122 for 5 with Madawa Warnapura unbeaten on 46.

Ragama CC vs SSC

A fighting 94 by Akshu Fernando saved the day for Ragama as they posted 220 for their first innings against SSC at R Premadasa. Ragama were in dire straights after loosing 36 for 4. Lahiru Milantha showed good resistance at the top with 40 runs but after his dismissal it was Akshu Fernando who soldiered on for Ragama. For SSC, Vimukthi Perera bagged a 5-for and his spell with the new ball was lethal.

At stumps on Day 1, SSC were 54 for 2.

Tamil Union vs Army SC

Army took the upper hand on day 1 in their match against Tamil Union at SSC grounds. Tamil Union batted first and they were cleaned up cheaply for 174 runs with Yashoda Mendis taking 4 scalps and Seekuge Prasanna taking 3. Chamika Karunarathne showed grit in his knock of 61 while in form batsman Dineth Thimodya chipped in with a valuable 35.

Army in reply were cruising at stumps with 157 on board for the loss of just 1 wicket. Leo Francisco was unbeaten on 63.

Colts CC vs NCC

Former Royal College spinner Lasith Embuldeniya bagged a 6-for to clean up Colts for just 192 at the P Sara oval. Colts elected to bat first after winning the toss but they were soon found in deep waters at 67 for 5. Former Josephian Priyamal Perera and Akila Dhananjaya chipped in with cameos at the end to resurrect Colts and lead them to 192 runs. Embuldeniya ended with figures of 6 for 63.

At stumps on Day 1, NCC were 130 for 4.

Plate Championship

Bloomfield vs Saracens

Saracens were cruising at 169 for 3 in their first innings after they restricted Bloomfield for just 207 runs at Colts Grounds. Saracens won the toss and elected to field first. Kasun Rajitha took early wickets which gave the upper hand for Saracens. Apart from few 30’s from the batters, Bloomfield couldn’t build up their innings and they were ultimately cleaned up for 207. Suraj Randiv bagged 5 wickets while Rajitha took 3.

In reply, Saracens were 169 for 3 with Milinda Siriwardane unbeaten on 61 runs.

BRC vs Badureliya SC

Rumesh Buddika’s brilliant 133 propelled BRC to 348 for 8 at stumps on day 1 against Badureliya at Panagoda. They were reeling at 62 for 4 when skipper Harsha Vithana and Rumesh got together at the crease. The pair added 146 for the 5th wicket. Harsha scored 61 while Rumesh went on to make 133 runs with 10 boundaries and 6 maximums. Dilesh Gunarathne and Duvindu Thilakarathne bagged 3 wickets each.

Moors vs Galle CC

Galle were cleaned up for a solitary 175 in their first innings against Moors at BRC grounds. Despite winning the toss and batting first, Moors were not given a chance to build any partnerships. Apart from Pabasara Waduge’s fighting 83 there wasn’t much to speak of about the Moors batting line up.

Galle were 75 for 1 at stumps with a valuable half century by Damitha Hunukumbura.
