Vimukthi Kulathunga spins Lumbini to victory

Lumbini College trounce much fancied Prince of Wales College by 7 wickets in their Singer – Cup group B encounter which was worked off at BRC grounds today.

The Cambrians were dismissed for 97 in 62 overs early on the second day. Avindu Fernando made 27 as the top scorer for the visitors, as left-arm spinner Vimukthi Kulathunga bagged 4 scalps for Lumbini College. In reply Lumbini managed only 86 runs as the home team lasted only 26.2 overs. Thanuka Dabare stroked 30 important runs while Sanjaya Fernando and Thilan Nimesh shared 6 wickets for the visitors.

The lads from Havelock’s came back strong in the second innings as they rattled the visiting team for another low score 80 in 40.3 overs. Once again Vimukthi Kulathunga was terrific with the ball as he dismantled the Cambrian batting line up with his left-arm spin grabbing 6 for 27 in his 18 overs. He completed a match bag 10 wickets and also reached 50 wickets for the season.

Chasing a victory target of 92 the hosts were outstanding in the second innings as they reached the winning mark with a six over midwicket by left-handed Amitha Dabare. Ravindu Sanjana made a match winning half-ton as he was the only batsman to reach fifty in the game.

Nalanda College vs St. Anthony’s College, Wattala

St. Anthony’s College, Wattala took major honours against Nalanda College, Colombo in their group A game which concluded today at Wattala. The hosts won the toss and managed to put up a reasonable 191 on the board.

Eranga Madushan top scored with a half-ton and Asel Kulathunga picked up 4 wickets for the visitors. In response the visitors were bundled out for a 161 in 48 overs. Kavindu Maduka and Kaveesha Dulanjana grabbed 3 wickets a piece for the home team as they completed a first innings win. The hosts batting in the second innings were in tatters as they were knocked out for 107 runs.

DS Senanayake College vs Moratu Vidyalaya

Moratu Vidyalaya pulled off a thrilling first innings win against DS Senanayake College in a group C game which concluded today in Moratuwa.

The visitors made 217 earlier in the first innings thanks to a brilliant unbeaten century by left-handed Shehzad Ameen but it was not enough as the lads from Moratuwa chased down the target as they finished the second day at 246 for 6. Both Ishan Madushka and Jeewantha Fernando made crucial 80s for the home team to register a first innings win.
