The 91st National Athletic Championship organized by the Athletics Association of Sri Lanka was successfully concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium open grounds yesterday.
The mega event which as sponsored by the Bank of Ceylon was worked off on the 16th, 17th and 18th of September 2013
Sri Lanka Air Force achieved big at this 91st National Athletic Championship when they bagged 7 trophies out of 15 namely the N.M.Vasagam Challenge trophy, Anthony Abeysinghe Challenge trophy , Chandi Kannangara Memorial trophy. However , Sri Lanka Air Force could not obtain the Duncan White Challenge cup which is the most valuable trophy of the event as K.M.N.J Gunathilake of Sri Lanka Army secured the trophy. Sri Lanka Army had 6 trophies while Sri Lanka Navy managed to secure 2 trophies.
W.K.D.S. Perera representing the Sri Lanka Air Force, clinched the championship of the Decathlon final while W.M.S.D. Weerasinghe of Sri Lanka Army secured the runners up. Perera had a marvelous 59.56 performance while his counterpart just behind on 56.58
Sri Lanka Airforce team gave a superb performance at the Heptathlon final when K.M.K.N.A Fernando took first place defeating B.A.S.H. Ayesha of Sri Lanka Police. Further R.M.C.S.Rasnayake of Sri Lanka Air Force came through the first place of 400M Women’s final with a performance of 53.05 trouncing E.W.U Rathakumari of Sri Lanka Army.
At the 400M men’s final, the Sri Lanka Air Force team was overwhelmed by Sri Lanka Navy when K K K Senavirathne step into the winning line for 46.65. W.A.D.C.D.Aloka Sri Lanka Air Force was a mere 30 seconds behind the winner.
The Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Army gave a head to head battle at the 1500M Women’s final but G.T.A. Abeyratne was lucky enough to defeat U.K.N.Ratnayake of Sri Lanka Army. Nevertheless Sri anka Army secured the championship and the runners-up of the 1500M men’s final when P.H. Chamal and Nishnka Kumara came through the winning line.
