122

After two whole days of nonstop racing, the best of the best found themselves pitted against each other on Saturday the 14th at the finals of the 2nd annual Schools Nationals.

The finals were fierce; each athlete gave it their all, determined to take home gold for their school. All those gathered at the rowing club definitely witnessed some excellent rowing by each school.

Bishops College dominated the regatta, taking home three overall categories – Under 14, Under 16 and Under 20. However Ladies’ College emerged victorious in the Under 18 category with 3 Golds, a Silver, and 2 Bronzes. In the Men’s Category Ananda College reigned supreme as they bagged the Under 18 with three Golds and Under 20 category with two. The Anandians really showed their colours during the course of this regatta, especially during the final Under 20 Men’s Four race where they snatched the victory from the much fancied S Thomas’ College. The little oarsmen of Prince of Wales bagged the Under 14 category, and Royal College whitewashed the Under 16 category, winning the Gold in every event.

Speaking to ThePapare the captain of Ananda College said that he wish to thank every one of the crew members without which they wouldnt have been able to win the championship for the third consercative year. He also wished to extend his gratitude to the principle and the staff of Ananda College, the parents and all the anandians who supported in the victory.

Hats off to the officials’ and the athletes themselves, who, despite the sporadic weather and the numerous races rowed, ensured that the regatta ran to time.

At the end of three long days of rowing, each school has made their mark in the rowing arena. They now know where they stand relative to their competitors, which is valuable information considering the many upcoming encounters in the rowing calendar.
