Lyceum International School Wattala, proving to be a dominant force in the schools’ cricket scene once again, won the All Island Under 17 (Division III) Cricket tournament which was organized by the Sri Lanka Schools’ Cricket Association Colombo.
The Lyceum lads from Wattala who were having a fairly easy tournament, faced off against D.S. Senanayake Colombo in the Pre Quarter final match by 71 runs after batting first and scoring 273/8 in 50 overs and bowling out the opposition for 202 in 45.5 overs.
In the Quarter final they faced off against Kekirawa Central College, winning the game with a massive margin of 191 runs. Batting first, Lyceum was bowled out for 276 in 46.1 overs. Lyceum again banking on their bowling attack, skittled the opposition for a mere 85 runs in 21.1 Overs.
Feeling confident and just one game away from reaching the finals, Lyceum International Wattala played Galahitiyawa Central College in the first semi-final. Bowling first Lyceum International was able to hold the lads from Galahitiyawa Central College to 202/9 in 50 overs. Made to chase for the first time in the tournament the boys from Wattala displayed some technical prowess to secure the win and a place in the finals by scoring 206/4 in 31.1 Overs and winning by 6 Wickets.
The best was saved for last and the final proved to be the best game of the tournament as Lyceum International School Wattala faced off against St. Benedict’s College, Colombo. Lyceum was put in to bat first and were bowled out for 270 in 44 overs. For the first time in this tournament the bowling attack of Lyceum was in shambles and had to recover fast to hold out the boys from St. Benedict’s to 257/7 in 50 overs, winning the game by a close 13 runs and be crowned Champions in the Under 17 Schools Division III Tournament.
The special award for Man of the Final was presented to Shabiq Ifthary of Lyceum International School Wattala.
