No luck for Sri Lanka in ITF Junior Circuit Week 1

The first week of the ITF Junior series came to a conclusion on Sunday (11th) at the Singhalese Sports Club Courts with Daevenia Achong of the Netherlands taking the honours in the Girls’ draw while Shan-Yuan Ou of Chinese Taipei took the Boys’ title in the first week.

The Sri Lankan players in the Boys’ draw did not have the privilege of progressing beyond the first round of play where all four players, Vibuda Wijebandara, Archana Lokuge, Avindra Perera and Manal Algama lost their first round games in the main draw. Eight seed Shan-Yuan Ou of Chinese Taipei took the first-week title defeating Muzammil Murtaza of Pakistan 7-5, 6-3.

ITF JuniorHowever, Sri Lanka found luck in the Girls’ draw as Sri Lanka’s top seed Nethmi Waduge progressed up to the quarterfinal stage. Facing Taipei player Ling Hsuan Wei in the 1st round, Nethmi registered a 6-0, 6-0 win and later defeated Chui Kei Leung of Hong Kong 3-6, 6-3 & 6-4.

She fell two steps behind the main prize as Chao-Yi Wang of Taipei defeated the Lankan champion 6-2, 6-2 in the quarter-finals. Anika Seneviratne defeated her first round opponent 6-0, 6-2 but did not move beyond the second round.

The second week of the ITF Junior Circuit commenced yesterday at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts and the final encounters are set to take place towards the end of the week.
