‘2006 to 2012, not a couple of years back, that’s when these financial irregularities took place, according to the Auditor General’s Department’ Mr. Anura De Silva, President of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) said, expressing the current administration’s innocence with regards to accusations of financial irregularities.

In a not so surprising turn of events, media reports have claimed that there has been a misappropriation of funds that took place in the Football Federation during the tenure of Mr. Ranjith Rodrigo as President of the Federation and Mr. Anura De Silva as CEO, an allegation raised by the Parliamentary Committee on Public Enterprise (COPE).

However, these allegations were proved to be false as it has come to light that these irregularities took place during the years 2006 – 2012, before the appointments of the current administration.

In other words, individuals such as Bodhi Liyanage, Thilina Panditharatne, Gamini Randeniya, Hurley Silveira and Sarath Weerasekera are responsible for the unsavoury situation the Federation has fallen into as they were the elected presidents during the time.

‘These irregularities have made the Federation run under strict scrutiny as the COPE has personally asked for the activity plans, and other details, in order to fully understand the transparency of the organization’ Mr. De Silva added during the press conference.

Furthermore, the wrong doers are yet to be discovered as the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is still in the middle of investigations.

Further development about the investigation could not be obtained from the high ranking officials due to a court ruling which has forbidden them from speaking in detail about the financial irregularities.
