The ever-popular All – Island Schools Relay carnival which had been resurrected after a lapse of many years kicked off in a flying fashion today at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy.
The tournament which is scheduled to take place from 22-24th June saw 3560 students from over 300 schools competing in 5 age groups namely U13, 15, 17, 19 & 21 participating. Today on the first day of the relay carnival, with an overall championship trophy on offer for schools that excel in the age groups, the opening ceremony of the event was graced by Mr. Sarath Ekanayake – Chief Minister of the Central province.

The day saw 10 finals being competed by athletes from across the island spanning across all age groups, being worked off while the 4x100m relay finals were carried out in the evening while most of the 200 events held were the heats and the semi-finals.
Walala A. Rathnayake Vidyalaya stood out above the rest of the schools by winning 5 of the 10 finals while St. Peter’s, St. Benedicts relay teams qualified convincingly to the next rounds.
