Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has appointed 42-year old Englishmen, Simon Willis as the new High Performance Manager for a two-year period.
He was previously the High Performance Director of Kent Cricket Club in England. Willis will commence his two-year contract from 1st of June ending his 13-year coaching stint at his club. He has also played 16 first-class matches and 14 List A games from 1993 to 1999 for Kent as a wicket-keeper batsman.
According to Sri Lanka Cricket President, Thilanga Sumathipala, The Sri Lanka A team, Sri Lanka Development Squad, Under 23 and Under 19 squads will be working under him while all the SLC contracted coaches except the national coach would be reporting to him.
“I am very grateful to Sri Lanka Cricket for offering me this exciting new opportunity. I am very much looking forward to getting started and the challenges ahead – it’s going to be a great journey. I see it as an exciting time to get involved with Sri Lanka Cricket and I am looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together. Ultimately it will be about creating an environment that meets the needs of the players and allows them to continue to develop and improve. If they are talented, work hard, get the right backing and enjoy what they are doing then they will have a better chance of succeeding in my opinion.” Wills said in a statement released by Kent Cricket.
The announcement came as Sri Lanka suffered a drubbing at the hands of England in the first Test at Headingley. Their reversals began in 2015 with home defeats to India and Pakistan, while also losing the number one ICC T20I rankings earlier this year.
