The Sri Lanka Netball Federation (SLNF) is hoping to forward their proposal to host the 2018 Asian Netball Championships to the Asian Netball congress in the coming months.

The SLNF had previously requested the Asian Netball Federation permission to stage event at the Hong Kong Asian Netball Congress in December 2015. However in a surprising turn of events they then withdrew from staging the event citing concerns regarding stadium facilities.

Japan and Pakistan too had made bids to stage the event in 2018, but were turned down due to lack of experience in staging such an event.

Earlier this year the Secretary of the Asian Netball Federation had inquired from the SLNF whether Sri Lanka is ready and willing to stage the 2018 championships and also had wanted to know about the ground conditions and hotel facilities but Sri Lanka had given a negative reply, and had turned down the request to stage the event, after volunteering to stage the event in Hong Kong last year.  President of the SLNF Mrs. Yasa Ramachandra is said to have given the ongoing renovations at the Sugathadasa Stadium as reason to have rejected the proposal.

Prior to this Sri Lanka had staged the Senior Asian Netball Championships twice, in 2001 and 2012. In the 5th Asian Senior Netball Championships held in 2001, Sri Lanka beat Singapore to emerge champions at the Sugathadasa Stadium. In 2012, the 8th Asian Senior Netball Championships Singapore emerged champions defeating Sri Lanka in the final.
