Mihiliya and Ravindu, the upcoming squash stars to represent Sri Lanka at Youth Asian Games

Mihiliya Methsarani from Sirimavo Balika Vidyalaya and Ravindu Laksiri from D S Senanayake College will have the honor of representing Sri Lanka in the discipline of Squash at the 2nd Youth Asian Games to be held in Nanjing-China.

Mihiliya Methsarani who won a Bronze medal at the recently concluded Asian junior Squash Championships held in Jordan will be the top contestant from Sri Lanka. Many hopes are on Mihiliya to win a medal for Sri Lanka as she has already made her mark in the Asian junior squash arena. At present this upcoming star holds the top rank locally in both Women’s junior and senior categories. This will be a very good opportunity for the youngster to show her colors while attaining more international exposure. 

Ravindu Laksiri who is the top junior player in Sri Lanka will take part in the Boys event already having represented the country in both junior and senior events. Ravindu too possesses a lot of International exposure having fared well in the previous Asian Junior Squash Championships.

The Sri Lankan Squash duo will only take part in the individual event as a minimum of three players are needed to participate in either the boys or girls team event. The authorities have not given the green light to send additional players for the team event due to financial constraints as the limited space available was accommodated for the players from various sport disciplines based on their past performances.

The Games are held every four years and the inaugural edition was held in 2009 in Singapore in preparation of the Youth Olympic Games, attracting more than 1000 athletes who participated in 11 sporting disciplines over 90 events.. The 2nd Asian Youth Games will be held from 16th to 24th of August 2013 with the games expanding to  15 Sports,118 events featuring the budding talents of 45 Asian nations
