Southern Province and North Western Province advance to the final

In dramatic turn of events on day two, Southern Province and North Western Province booked their places in the SLC Super 19 Provincial Tournament 2016 final when they defeated firm favourites, Western Province South and Western Province North on first-innings respectively on Saturday.

At the end of day one, both teams from Western Province were looking firm favourites to advance to the final but the tides changed the direction on day two. Western Province Central and Central Province claimed first-innings points in the other two matches which ended today as the round-robin stage came to an end.

The final will take place on 10, 11 and 12 of May at R. Premadasa International Stadium.

Western Province North vs North Western Province

North Western Province ousted the Westerners on first-innings in their drawn encounter which concluded today at Army grounds in Panagoda.

After being 146 for 6 overnight, skipper Damitha Silva, left-hander Heshan Fernando and fast-bowler Randeera Ranasinghe made excellent cameo knocks to help North Western Province overtake the first-innings score of 221 posted by Western Province North. Skipper Silva made 59 while Fernando was dismissed for 49, both by Jehan Daniel but Ranasinghe made a useful contribution of 28 off 34 balls to clinch the victory in the last ball.

Sammu Ashan and Wanitha Wanninayake made half-centuries for their respective teams in their second innings but the result remained the same knocking out Western Province North.

WP North – 221/9 declared in 56.1 overs: Nipun Sumanasinghe 66, Krishan Sanjula 49, Nipun Haggalla 28, Damitha Silva 3/70, Wanitha Wanninayake 3/48.

North Western – 222/8 in 65 overs: Kamesh Nirmal 27, Damitha Silva 59, Heshan Fernando 49, Randeera Ranasinghe 28*, Jehan Daniel 4/56, Samitha Ranga 2/15.

WP North (2nd inn) – 195/7 declared in 38 overs: Sammu Ashan 64, Nipun Sumanasinghe 46, Krishan Sanjula 23, Dushan Guruge 22*, Randeera Ranasinghe 3/53, Damith Silva 2/83.

North Western (2nd inn) – 135/6 in 39 overs: Wanitha Wanninayake 51, Helitha Bambarenda 2/13, Jehan Daniel 2/27.


Southern Province vs Western Province South

Southern Province skipper Navindu Nirmal and his army of spinners helped their team beat Western Province South on first-innings in their match which concluded at FTZ grounds in Katunayake.

After being 156 for 2 at one stage, Western Province South were bundled out for 196 in pursuit of 240 posted by Southern Provinc. The left-arm spin duo, Hareen Buddhila and Dilum Sudeera along with off-spinner Kavindu Ediriweera shared 8 wickets to bring the downfall of the Westerners. Prince of Wales’ College batsman Vishwa Chathuranga struck his second ton of the tournament.

The Southerners were in a spot of bother in their second innings at 54 for 5 but another calm and composed 60 by Nirmal ensured they set an impossible of target of 240 in 21 overs for their opponents. Apart of Nirmal, Amindu Udara, Chathura Milan and Thilan Prashan made useful contributions. The Westerners were 122 for 6 at close of play with Nirmal, the wicket-keeper claiming 5 victims. Avishka Fernando’s 40-ball 66 was not enough for Western Province South.

Western Province Central vs Northern Province

Western Province Central had to be satisfied only with the first-innings points against Northern Province at Colts grounds.

A clinical all-round effort by the Westerners were too much for the boys from Northern Province as they were bowled out for 124 in their second innings. Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Thanuka Dabare clobbered half-tons on day two for WP Central which set a victory target of 255 for the Northerners. They were 100 for 6 at stumps on day two.

WP Central – 171 all out in 64 overs: Manelkar De Silva 97*, Vishad Randika 37, S. Mathushan 3/32, Kapil Raj 4/67, Ayana Siriwardana 2/42.

Northern – 124 all out in 48.2 overs: S Rushanthan 34, Sajith Sameera 2/27, Lahiru Dilshan 3/08.

WP Central (2nd inn) – 207/6 declared in 45.1 overs: Thanuka Dabare 50, Pasindu Sooriyabandara 64, Pathum Nissanka 45, Ayana Siriwardana 3/68.

Northern (2nd inn) – 100/6 in 44 overs: M Nithushan 39*, Ayana Siriwardana 21, Sajith Sameera 2/12, Lahiru Dilshan 2/34, Vimukthi Kulathunga 2/37.


Central Province vs North Central Province

Central Province dominated proceedings on both days but had to be contained only with the first-innings win over North Central Province at R. Premadasa International Stadium.

The Trinity College duo, Shanogeeth Shanmuganathan and Hasitha Boyagoda made 72 and 70 respectively for Central Province as they made a commendable 291 for 5 from their allotted 65 overs in reply to the first-innings score of 205 accumulated by North Central Province. In the second innings, North Central batted till close of play posting 199 for 8. The Rajans off-spinner Gihan Vitharana claimed a six-wicket haul while Anandian Ashel Sigera made a half-ton.
