Captain Raveen Sayer’s exciting seven wicket spell in the second innings brought home victory for Trinity College against Dharmapala College Pannipitiya winning the game by 167 runs marking their 7th outright win for the season.

It was a bowler’s paradise at the Asgiriya stadium favoring the spin department as Trinity College were put to bat first on day one.  Batting first the hosts were able to wind up only 144 runs in their first innings. Top scoring for the hosts’ was Dilan Jayalath with 47 who also surpassed the 800-run mark for the season and Hasitha Boyagoda contributed with 31.

For the visitors, Pasindu Keshan did the damage securing a 6-wicket haul alongside Nishan Perera who ended with figures reading 2/22.

Disappointingly, the Dharmapala batting line up did not see the persistent conditions that favored the bowlers. Coming on to the field, Dharmapala College fell haplessly for a mere 85 runs. There was no proper contenders emerging in the batting lineup with the pressure exerted by Duvindu Tilekerathne and Thisaru Dilshan who bagged four wickets each.

Coming out to bat in the second innings, the hosts’ went on to better their first innings total scoring 172. Dilan Jayalath who missed out on his half century in the first innings was able to have his intentions satisfied as he went on to score 56 runs building the Trinity innings. Pasindu Keshan took a match bag of 10 wickets with his seven wickets in the second innings.

With a target of 239 needed to win, Dharmapala College fell short once again to the aggressive bowling attack led by skipper Raveen Sayer. He took a seven wicket haul in the second innings which proved to be the game changer in the encounter as Dharmpala batting crumbled in the final session of play. Amila Dayanayaka was the only batsman who anchored the innings but with him losing partners at a pace on the other side, Dharmapala College was all out for 64 runs.

With the second outright win coming Trinity’s way for the 2016 calendar year, Trinity College will continue to top the table with 7 outright victories under their belt.

S.Thomas’ College vs St. Benedict’s College

It was a walk in the park for S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia in their Division I cricket encounter against St. Benedicts College as the former won the game by an innings and 63 runs at Mount Lavinia.

Coming to bat in the first innings, the Thomians amassed a mammoth stand of 224/8 before they opted to declare. Top scoring for the side was skipper Sachitha Jayathilake with 81 runs and Chamindu Wijesinghe who chipped in with 37. The notable performances in the bowling department for the Bens were Yohan Perera and Dellon Peiris as they took took 3 wickets a-piece.

It was a poor batting performance from the Bens when they took the crease in the 1st innings. As they folded for 110 runs, the Thomian skipper enforced the follow on right away. Chamindu Wijesinghe and Madushan Kularatna contributed with 37 and 35 respectively for the Bens in their first innings.

Disappointment reeled in for the Bens as the experienced Thomian bowling department bundled them out for 51 runs in the follow on. The top scorer from the first innings, Sachitha Jayathilake showcased his worthiness once again but this time with the ball securing 3 wickets. Dellon Peiris however was the danger man as he went on to secure a five-wicket haul.

With this win, S. Thomas’ College get their fourth outright win for the season and will look to continue the winning momentum in the coming weeks.
