Killer Whale Aquatics brought a shocker to the defending champions; the Sri Lanka Navy team winning the National Aquatics Championships by a 158 point lead that was concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Sunday.

The Killer Whale Aquatics Club that participated in the Men’s category secured 413 points in the overall tournament while the Sailors came in at second with 278 points. In the Women’s category, it was Visakha Vidyalaya who was triumphant with 268 points and Musaeus College came in second with 185 points. Royal College was behind the Sailors to get the third place in the overall competition.

Sri Lanka’s current national champion Matthew Abeysinghe took the overall men’s individual championships award winning all the events he participating and setting a new national record in the 200m individual Medley. The Abeysinghe brothers; Matthew, Dillon, Andrew and Kyle set a new record in the 4 X 50m Medley relay coming three second early.

The tournament that was worked off for a span of three years saw a few emerging talents but alongside the Killer Whales, it was the Sri Lanka Amry and the Navy who had better edge in terms of invididual performances. Army’s Ishani Senanayaka was adjudged the women’s overall champion winner while Pahan De Silva of D. S. Senanyaka College won the junior boy’s category.

Speaking to ThePapare.com, the head coach of victorious Killer Whale Aquatics had this to add;

“Most of the senior swimmers have not been fully tapered for this meet as their training programme is focused on the South Asian Games. I am also happy to note that several of our swimmers who have had to represent their respect schools and services have also done well.”

The best performers of the nationals will be shortlisted for the South Asian Games next year.
