Cherantha and Kanitha set new records at SAG trials

National swimmers Cherantha De Silva and Kanitha Munasinghe set two national records in the swimming trials that were held in lieu with the South Asian Games that is set to take place in northern India early February.

Cherantha De Silva who also was a part of the Sri Lankan contingent who toured Kazan, Russia for the World Swimming Championships last year broke Matthew Abeysinghe’s 200m Butterfly event record clocking a time of 2:07:74. It is a two second improvement from Abeysinghe’s record that was 2:09:74. The 20-year-old swimmer who is a former Anandian is all set for his journey with the Lankan contingent to Guwahati in India where the swimming events will take place. With his experience and exposure in this young age, he is marked as a potential medal winner for the nation.

Meanwhile former Royalist Kanith Munasinghe bettered his 50-meter Breast Stroke record by clocking 30.68 seconds. His earlier timing read 30.71 and was set at the National Age Group Swimming Championships in 2014.

The selection trials took place at the Sugathadasa Indoor Swimming Complex last week and with a month to go for the South Asian Games, the swimmers will have ample time to train before they fly to India for the big contest.

The South Asian Games will take place in Guwahati and Shillong in Northern India and will consist of 23 sporting disciplines.
