St Peter’s College defeated De Mazenod College by an innings an 25 runs in their Singer U19 cricket tournament.
St Peter’s played their first away match for this season against De Mazenod College, Kandana. Their previous match was washed out against Trinity College last week. Peterites not yet to create an impact this season, having secured only first innings points against Joseph Vaz. Trinity on the other hand had a dominant season thus far.
De Mazenod won the toss elected to bat first. They were struggling against the spin attack of the visitors from the beginning, in no time the spinners took charge of the game. Taneesha Weerakoon rattled his way through the batting line up bagging 6 wickets for just 31 runs, his first fifer for the season. Debutante Left arm leg spinner Sadesh Pathiranage also chipped in with two wickets for 15 runs helping his team to bundled out the home side for just 114 in 41.1 overs. With the bat for De Mazenod Akash Senaratne missed out on his half century by just one run while Sangeeth Deshan scored a nice cameo of 33.
Peterites came on to bat in the afternoon session of day one. In form opener Hashan Wanasekara extended his run tally for this season by scoring a brilliantly composed 96 runs. While wickets fell all around he kept his head high and helped his team gain some good advantage in the first innings. Akash Senaratne showed his all-round skill in the match by taking 4 wickets for42 runs. adding to that valuable knock he played earlier in the game. Rukshan Fernando bagged 3 wickets for 58 helping his team to restrict the visitors for just 184 runs.
With a 70 run lead, St Peter’s came all guns blazing to somehow make it count. But they were only able to stay out there for one over due to the rain. Match was on hold for a long time due to wet outfield. Towards the latter part of the afternoon session umpires decided to resume play. Time was running out on the visitors but they were determined in winning the game. It only took 22.3 overs for Peter’s to get those ten scalps, as De Mazenod collapsed failing to survive against the strong spin bowling attack. Skipper Vinu Mohotti led from front by taking 4 wickets for 15 runs. While the tall left arm leg-spinner Ashanth Malka grabbed 4 wickets for 22. Sadesh Pathiranage had an ideal start for his season, taking 2 scalps for a mere 6 runs. Strong bowling performance by the Peterites which helped them to secure their first outright win this season.
