Jayantha Dharmadasa had been nominated to head Sri Lanka Cricket by its Executive committee on Thursday night. Jayantha, the elder brother of former president Upali Dharmadasa, was once the former chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee.
All three nominations for the post of presidency had been rejected on technical grounds. As a result, the executive committee had the opportunity to nominate a person to run the richest sports body of the country, which deals in millions of dollars from time to time.
The name of Jayantha Dharmadasa, to be the next president of Sri Lanka Cricket, was proposed by Jayananda Warnaweera of Galle DCA and it was seconded by A. R. M. Aroos of Moors Sports Club. The Ex-Co has had no hesitation in approving the proposed name.
This is the first time that all nominations for the post of presidency had been rejected on technical ground and the Ex-Co has chosen a president since Sri Lanka gained test status in 1981.
Two remaining nominations for the post of president, Upali Dharmadasa and Sumith R. Perera were rejected by the Executive committee since they were not forwarded in accordance with the constitution of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The nomination to the post of president, from former president Thianga Sumathipala, was rejected by the minister of sports earlier this week.
