3 enthusiastic participants tell you WHY SRI LANKA – and How to train for this race

With this first UCI Cycling For All event approaching, some registered riders share their excitement about it.

Sri Lankan Christy Fernando had his name on the rider’s list, with confidence in the organization and the quality of the race. 

The friendly atmosphere and hospitality of the people of this South Asian pearl island, are ones of the many attractions for international participants.

Joe Rouse from Canada/New Zealand has always wanted to ride a UCI race with gifted riders from around the world, including the competitive local cyclists, namely Sri Lanka Police, Army, Navy, Air Force and few other teams. He remembers his previous visit to the welcoming country and impatiently awaits his Sri Lankan race “I look forward to a warm welcome and strong public support for the race-cheering kids, especially!”

Tinus Havinga, another hard-training cyclist preparing for his way up to the World Cycling Tour finale, sees Sri Lanka mystic and culturally rich. He will also explore the historic sites of the country after the Challenge event with his family.

Tinus kindly shares his training schedule, which he addresses that “adaptability is essential”.

Monday      : Rest 

Tuesday      : Cycling 2hrs at 80% of my maximum heart rate

Wednesday: Cycling 1hr or Spinning at 70% of my maximum heart rate

Thursday    :  Cycling 2hr or Spinning 1hr at 80% of my maximum heart rate

Friday         :  Semi rest day with strength, core muscle and lower back flex exercises

Saturday    :  Cycling 3hrs at 80% of my maximum heart rate

Sunday       :  Cycling 3hrs at 80% of my maxomum heart rate

Tips:

1. Find a programme that works for you and try stay with your routine: Fit the exercise somewhere else during a week, if the original one is conflicted with other commitments.

2.  Look for training programmes on the Internet.

3. Specific diet is not necessarily a must-do. But enough amount of natural protein is good for you.

Impressive showing: Entered a qualifying race in Trento, Italy the La Leggendaria Charly Gaul, where the Final race of this Cycling For All event is taking place this year, also one of the toughest courses on tour,  achieved his goal in Italy by qualifying for the 2012 final in South Africa, his home country.

2. Technical guide to the three races –

 

Article 1 : Organization

The GranFondo Challenge Sri Lanka 2013 is organized by United Cycling International. It is to be held on 5 April 2013 in Sri Lanka.

Article 2 : Type of Event

The GranFondo Challenge Sri Lanka 2013 Is a competitive event open for international and local (Sri Lankan) riders of all categories. The categories are mentioned at para 7.

The GranFondo Challenge Sri Lanka 2013 is a stage race of 3 days : one road race, one time trial and one criterium. All events will be started and finished in Galle Face Green Colombo, only the road race will be finished at Lelopitiya.

Road Race(110.4km):

The neutralized start will be in Colombo Galle Face Green.The real start will be on front of the Parliament after 11.4km.

The course will then bring to riders to the small town of Lellopitiya,after a total ride of 110,4 km or up and down roads. Total Climb: 1’080m. 3 Feeding zones will be available on the course.

Timing Trial(17,6km) :

The time trial will be started and finished in Colombo Galle Face Green.

The flat course will bring the riders on Marine Drive and back to the Galle Face Green Park and will be a real course for time trial specialists

Criterium (2,66km circuit)

On Sunday morning, final Criteriums will be organized on Galle Face Green in Colombo.

The road race and the time trial are qualifying events for the UCI World Cycling Tour 2013.

The participation at one event only is also available.

Article 3:Registration

The total limit of riders is 500. Registration is through internet or web site. Registration forms are available on our web site www.grandfondosrilanka.com.

All riders have to pay the registration fee by cash and credit card.

Article :4 Wrist bands,Handle bar Numbers & Bib numbers and Timing Chips.

All riders must wear their wrist band,found in their technical envelope.Wrist bands allow access to aid stations and post ride lunch;it may be worn on either wrist.The wrist bands Handle bar numbers and Bib numbers will be provided by the organizer.

At check in, all participants will receive a unique handle bar number that will match their bib number. These numbers help identify your bike in case of emergency, but they will also help our event photographers identify you for official ride photos. Handlebar number should be attached as follows with the provided twist ties.

Do not place the handle bar number on your frame,wrapped around your head tube or behind your bike;it belongs on your handle bars! It has a timing chip on the back,and if not installed correctly,your GPM time will not be properly recorded.

Article 5:Regulations

The UCI World Cycling Tour is a ‘cycling for all’ series where cyclists from all over the world can participatein events where they can obtain their ticket for the UCI World Cycling Tour final, the official UCI Master World Championship in different age groups. There are qualifier events for both road-races and time-trial. The UWCT corporation will crown the new UCI World Master World champions in Road racing and Time-trial.

Article 6: Participation Rights

Riders can start with:

 Day license according to the regulations of the National Federation.

 An elite license with exception of:

o Any rider who has during the current year been a member of a team registered with the UCI.

o Any rider who has taken part in a world championships, the Olympic games, continental championships or games, regional games, the Commonwealth games, or a World Cup during the current year, other than events for masters.

o Any rider who scored UCI points is 2012.

 Master license

According to UCI regulations, riders with UCI points are not allowed to take part in UWCT qualifiers or UWCT Final

Article8:Agegroups

The events offer results in different age groups, for both women and men: Age groups:

 16 – 29y (Challenger Class)

 30 – 34y

 35 – 39y

 40 – 44y

 45 – 49y

 50 – 54y

 55 – 59y

 60 – 64y

 +65y

The age group you belong to is the age you are at 31 december 2013. Granting of participation rights for the UWCT Final Each UWCT event will grant participation rights for the UWCT Final, the Amateur World Championships. By the end of each race, the first 25% athletes of each age group, with a minimum of 3 riders per age group, will be awarded with guaranteed entry to the UWCT Final and be able to race for the World Champion title. The winners of the slots will be announced on the UWCT website. This decision was made in consideration to women who often race in small groups, with less than 10 participants per age class, limiting the “25% Best” to one rider. The new system will also benefit elder age groups and increase the competitiveness for the World Champion title. In addition, riders who participate in 3 qualifier events during the season will also get their ticket to the final. They don’t have to finish in the 25% first in their age category.

Article 9:Attire / Dress

The wearing of helmet during the race is mandatory.

All riders are to wear the appropriate dress.

Article10 :.Special Regulations GranFondo Challenge Sri Lanka 2013:

General

 The GranFondo Challenge Sri Lanka 2013 is organized under the UCI (International Cycling Union) , rules and regulations. The riders are to respect the law of the land all times.

 The Organisers reserve the right to limit and refuse entries

 The Organisers reserve the right to remove any participant deemed physically incapable of continuing the race.

 The Organisers reserve the right to amend the Rules and Regulations without prior notification.

 The Organisers reserve the right to amend the race course with prior notice to participants.

 In the event of inclement weather, the Organisers reserve the right to delay the commencement of the race, shorten the race or modify the course.

 Should the inclement weather persist after the delay, the Organisers reserve the right to cancel the race without any refund of registration fees.

Article 11:Race Entry

 Participants must be 16 years old to take part in the event.

 Participants under 21 years old must provide parental consent to take part in the event.

 On-the-spot entries will not be accepted.

 The Organisers will not be responsible for any disputes arising from incomplete and/or incorrect entry details given by the participants.

 Race entries are non-transferable. Any person doing so will be held responsible in case of an accident arising from or provoked by the other person during the race. The Organisers reserve the right to exclude both parties from future events.

 Once the registration form has been processed, there will be no fee refund for the participants who, for whatever reason, eventually do not take part.

Article 12 : Equipment

 It is the participant’s responsibility to ensure that their bicycles are in good working condition and safe for use in a mass participation cycling event.

 The organizer reserves the right to refuse participants with bicycles that are considered unsafe for the event.

 For the time-trial event, time-trial bikes are allowed as per UCI Technical Regulations.

 Triathlon handlebars, aerobars, bar extensions and bull horns are not allowed in the road race and the criterium.

Article 13: .Participants Obligations

 Participants must keep to the left side of the road and observe traffic rules at all time

 Participants must ensure that their competition numbers are clearly visible at the back of their adorned apparel at all times.

 Wearing headphones is not allowed at all times.

 Private (support) vehicles are prohibited from the event.

Article 14: Category & Ranking

The event is timed for all the participants, during the whole course. Timekeeping will provide an overall final ranking, a ranking for woman and another for men.

 Cyclists will be classified in their respective category.

Age groups: 16 – 29y (Challenger Class) 30 – 34y 35 – 39y 40 – 44y 45 – 49y 50 – 54y 55 – 59y 60 – 64y +65

 It will be a general classification per time and per category for cyclists finishing all 3 events.

 Cyclists who do not complete a stage are allowed to start the next stage but will not compete for the general classification.

Article 15: Insurance

 Each participant have to be fully cover with health, accident and damages insurances.

 The organizer declines all responsibility.

Article 16: Technical support / Feeding

Technical support / Mechanical assistance will be provided through out the race from 4 wheel vehicles and motor cycles.

Feeding stations are arranged at 4 places during the race.
