Sri Lanka Men’s Table Tennis won the Silver Medal in the team event while the men and women combined for 10 Bronze Medals at the South Asian Games 2016.
Sri Lanka Men’s team which included Udaya Ranasinghe, Rohan Sirisena and Nirmala Jayasinghe were beaten by India in the best of five matches.
Ranasinghe was beaten 3-1 by A.Amalraj with Amalraj winning the first two sets 11-9 and 13-11. Ranasinghe won the third set 6-11 but was unable to win the 4th as Amalraj won it 11-8. Sirisena was beaten in straight sets by G.Sathiyan 11-3, 11-3 and 11-3. In a must win third match Nirmala Jayasinghe won the first set against Sanil Shetty 11-8 but Shetty bounced back to win the next two 3-11, 7-11 and after a thrilling 4th set Shetty prevailed 11-13.
Sri Lanka Men had a close semifinal match-up against Nepal which went down to the 5th game. Ranasinghe won the first match 11-9, 11-6 and 11-4 but Purushottam Bajracharya and Shiv Sundar Gathe defeated Rohan Sirisena and Jayasinghe respectively.
Needing to win the next two matches Ranasinghe defeated Bajracharya 11-9, 11-9 and 11-7 while veteran Sirisena after a close battle defeated Deep Saun 11-7, 14-12, 12-10 to go into the final.
In the group stages Sri Lanka won against Afghanistan (3-0), Pakistan (3-1) and Maldives (3-0).
Men’s Team Results
In the Women’s Team event Sri Lanka had to settle for a Bronze Medal after they were defeated 3-2 by Pakistan in the semifinal.
Ruvini Kannangara won 11-8, 3-11, 1-11 and 6-11 against Raheela Kashif but Captain Ishara Madurangi lost to Shabnam Bilal 11-4, 2-11, 11-9 and 11-9. Erandi Warusavithana won 8-11, 9-11 and 11-13 against Ayesha Ansari but Madurangi and Kannangara lost to Kashif and Bilal respectively in close encounters.
In the group stages Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan (3-0), Nepal (3-1) and Bangladesh (3-0).
Women’s Team Results
In the Mixed Doubles Event the pairings of Udaya Ranasinghe – Ruvini Kannangara and Rohan Sirisena – Ishara Madurangi settle for Bronze after they were defeated in the semifinals.
Udaya and Ruvini lost 7-11, 12-10, 11-13 and 6-11 while Rohan and Ishara also lost in four sets 4-11, 13-11, 6-11, 5-11.
Mixed Doubles Results
Rohan Sirisena – Chameera Ginige and Udaya Ransinghe – Nirmala Jayasinghe won Bronze Medals in the Men’s Doubles. Both pairs lost their semifinals 8-11, 12-14, 9-11 and 7-11, 4-11, 4-11.
In the Women’s Doubles Ishara Madurangi and Erandi Warusavithana won Bronze after being defeated in the semifinal by Pooja Sahasrabudhe and Manika Batra 2-11, 2-11, 3-11.
In the Men’s Singles Sirisena and Ranasinghe lost their semifinals. Ranasinghe lost 5-11, 12-14, 10-12, and 6-11 to India’s Sathiyan Gnanasekaran while Sirisena lost to Anthony Amlaraj 9-11, 4-11, 3-11, and 7-11.
In the Women’s Singles Ishara Madurangi and Ruvini Kannangara lost their respective semifinals to Manika Batra and Mouma Das. Madurangi lost 10-12, 11-9, 2-11, 5-11 and 8-11 to Batra while Kannangara lost 4-11, 9-11, 3-11 and 7-11 to Das.
