Joes record 1st outright win for the season with Hewawasam Hattrick

St. Josephs College registered their first outright win of the season today beating Moratuwa Vidyalaya by an innings and 56 runs in a match played in Moratuwa. 

 

Josephians batting first managed to score 220 runs in their first innings for the loss of 6 wickets with their in-form batsman Yashan Samarasinghe scoring a fluent ton (101). Sachien Hewawasam (52) and Priyamal perera (43) made telling contributions to set up a convincing score for their team. The top half of the visiting teams batting order came to terms with the wicket early on and eased through their runs in 61 over’s before declaring. 

Sulakshana Fernando and Arshad Devinda were the only bowlers who succeeded in troubling the Josephian batsmen as they captured 4 wickets between them. 

The home team batting in their first innings were in complete disarray as they were bowled out for 63 runs in 26 over’s. Thilan Kavishka was the only batsman who put up a fight scoring 21 runs. Meanwhile the Josephians took charge of the bowling with all rounder Priyamal Perera grabbing 3 wickets and left arm leg spinner Moditha Weerasinghe finishing with stunning figures of 4 wickets for 2 runs. 

The host’s forced to follow on, had to face the bowling of skipper Sachien Hewawasam who completely outclassed the Moratuwa lads claiming 6 wickets for 25 runs. The Josephian captain bowled with a lot of control and deceit and managed to bag a hattrick along the way. It was a superlative effort by Hewawasam as he led his team to their first outright win of the season. First innings bowling hero, Moditha Weerasinghe continued to trouble the batsmen with his left arm orthodox bowling claiming four wickets, which gave him a match bag of 8 wickets.
