Saliya Kumara to coach Trinity College

    Former Kandy Sports Club captain and Trinity College Alumni Saliya Kumara have been appointed as Assistant Coach for the Trinity College rugby team for the upcoming 2015/2016 season.

    Saliya Kumara who fine tuned his skills in the sport at Trinity College went on to play for Havelock’s FC and CH & FC before moving to his hometown club Kandy Sport Club. A fine back division player, Saliya has played several positions during his long lasting rugby career ranging from scrum half to full back. 

    A veteran in the sport, Saliya Kumara wore the national colours on several occasions in both the Sevens and XV’s formats excelled in both segments showing prominence as a sprinter and a clearance kicker. Saliya captained the Kandy side in 2012 ended being league champions. Saliya hanged his boots last year after Kandy triumphed under the leadership of Sean Wijesinghe winning the League title and the Clifford cup.

    An expert in the Sevens format of the sport, Saliya will be specifically aiding the quarter-backs in the team in the coming season. Coaching the Kandy Sports Club Sevens team in the recently concluded Inter Club Sevens championships, he was able to take the team to lift the title after a lapse of six years.

    Irish national Eric Miller will continue in his capacity of consultant while Sean Wijesinghe will be aiding the team as assistant coach. Trinity College under the Irishman ended third in the league table last season and the newly appointed coaching department will be opting for a better record this upcoming season.
