Defending champions Havelocks SC could not hold on to their title as Kandy edge passed the men in pink. F/T : Kandy SC 17 ( 1T 1C ) – Havelocks 10 ( 2T )

The Cup Final

It was a brilliant atmosphere under lights, a decent crowd at the picturesque Race Course international stadium. Fazil Marija kicked off for the hill country lads and Kandy managed to turn over the ball possession immediately from a break down. Captain Marija saw the open space at the sweeper position chipped the ball which did not bounce in favor of his chase. The Havelock’s Rehan Thyagarajah could not hold to the ball that came his way but support player Nigel Ratwatte was there to clean up saying thank you to the ball that bounced at him he went under the post in the second minute. Marija added the extras. (Kandy 07 – 00 Havelock)

The men in pink came charging in with the restart, some good hands between Dhanushka Ranjan, Sudarshana Muthuthantri and Shenal Dias which ultimately ended in to the hands of the dashing winger Sandun Herath who fended- off Richard Dharmapala of Kandy to score the try. Muthuthantri yet again displayed his individual brilliance with a break before going down with the tackle, Dias picked the loose ball and dived over the try line.  That gave the lead for the Park club going in to the half time.

HT – Kandy 07 (1T, 1C) – 10 (2T) Havelock’s

A different ploy was opted by Kandy in the attack sending the ball left to right and right to left. As a result Richard Dharmapala broke through the gain line to increase the lead by two points. Although Kandy had a penalty in their 40m seconds before the half time, they did not tap and run and instead put that in to touch and went to take the breather which was a good decision. Richard was astounding once again making some good yards but falling a meter short for his second try. His effort was not in vain as Nigel once again playing the supportive role picked and scored his second try. (Kandy 17 – 10 Havelock)

With a minute left for the final whistle, Ranjan made a dashing 60m run fending off Lavanga Perera but then came the valiant effort of Richard Dharmapala who ran from one corner to the other as he made a superman effort to stop Ranjan with a try saving tackle to win the game for Kandy.

Richard Dhramapala won the well-deserved player of the final.

FT – Kandy 17 (3T, 1C)– 10 (2T) Havelocks’s

The Plate Final

CR&FC did so well in the cup semifinal against Kandy but fell short. Nevertheless, the Reds outsmarted the Cops with a thumping 33 – 00 victory in the final. Police on the other hand did not give their best against the Havelock’s in the other cup semifinal. It’s a surprise that they could not score a single point in the plate final. Former Dharmaraja captain Rochana Hettiarachchi of CR was outstanding this weekend and won the award for the player of that final.

The Bowl Final

Navy ‘A’ 29 – 07 Army ‘A’ was the final score. Dinusha Chathuranga was in a fine form but the Sailors did not have enough experience to beat Kandy and Havelocks to go in to cup semifinal. Saliya Handapangoda too played well in the finals wher as the Soldiers did not have enough fire power to trouble the opposite team in the bowl final.

The Shield Final

Police ‘B’ 17 – 15 Havelocks ‘B’ with a nail biting finish as Havelock’s led until the last 30 seconds of the game. Brilliant play by Police as they went to score under the post and converted the try to break the young Havelock’s hearts. The boys in pink had some school stars on debut for club season, Shamri Burah, Nishon Perera, Lasindu Ishan to name a few.
