Avant BC recorded their first win by outclassing Police BC 71-63, last evening at the Police Park Basketball Court. This game that commenced at 6.30 pm, proved to be quite a feast to the eyes of the spectators.

Z. Krupkis of Avant BC won the jump ball, and went on to draw first blood after about a minute into the game. Both teams played equally well in the first quarter despite Avant BC having a clear advantage in terms of height, over their opponents. Their low post plays were met with tight man to man defense by the Police BC players. At the end of the maiden quarter Avant  BC led the game 15-14 with L. Samarasinghe scoring 8 points, which included two 3 pointers, while Sampath scored 9 points for Police BC.

Skipper Chamath Danawansa, was the playmaker for Avant, constantly feeding the two low posts. It was disappointing to witness the game being halted shortly to resolve a tussle that involved the players on the bench of the two teams. The defense of the Police players was on point as they scored off a couple of steals and defensive rebounds. As the cops led the game 26-24 for the first time that evening, they extended their lead to 6 points with just three more minutes to run down. Avant BC rose from the ashes and tightened their screws in defense right after to etch more rebounds than they did before during the final three minutes. Converting the second chances into points and running a couple of fast breaks; Avant BC squared the game at half time and said game on.

Half-Time: Avant Basketball Club 32- Police Basketball Club – 32

Chamath Danawansa dawned the party scoring as he scored the maiden points creating a beautiful offensive maneuver, off a failed attempt at the basket by their opponents in their first play. As the quarter progressed Police BC began to gain the lead, scoring off Avant turnovers with good passes and fast breaks. Avant began playing under pressure, forcing them to be on the back foot for quite a while and to make unforced errors. Police BC led the game by just one point at the end of the third quarter.

Avant BC started the final six hundred seconds strong and continued to dominate the offense. Making no mistake in their defensive rebounds, they continued to attack the basket, working the basketball into the hands of their post players. Police guarded their adversaries well, but they could not stop Avant’s 9-0 run in the middle of the quarter. The valiant and gusty Police, played their best until the final whistle, scoring even in the last 5 seconds; but at the end of the day it was just below par.
