22 racing events on the card – Sigiriya Rally 2015 on 2 August

    The Sigiriya Rally 2015 is to be staged at the SLAF circuit in Sigiriya for the seventh consecutive year on 1 and 2 of August. Sri Lanka Air Force and Sri Lanka Auto Sports Drivers Association are organizing this rally.

    The objective of the organizers, is not only makes this a unique experience for the competitors but also for the spectators as well.

    The SLAF track in the historic city of Sigiriya is designed with both rally and obstacle course making it a demanding track that will enthrall spectators. The practice sessions will be staged on 1 August while the main event will be on the 2nd. Attention has been paid to every detail to ensure challenging and competitive racing for the drivers, and for the amusement and enjoyment of the spectators while keeping safety in the forefront of all planning.

    Organizers are expecting between 170 – 175 competitors for both events while entries close on 21 July. This time 12 motor cycle events and 10 car events have been scheduled.

    Speaking at the occasion, Air Commodore Sanjaka Wijemanne Chairmen of Motor Racing Committee said that the Sri Lanka Air Force was to form a new team and committee for motor sports. And, we are not hiring any experienced drivers and riders to the team. We although aim to get veteran racing consultants and trainers in Sri Lanka, said Air Commodore in answer to a query from Ceylon Today.

    The primary objective for organizing this event, apart from showcasing the talent of our racing riders and drivers, is to enhance mutual understanding and trust between SLAF personnel and civilians he said.

    The proceeds from this event will go towards welfare activities of SLAF personnel. Palitha Jinasoma (Deputy General Manager Sales and Channel Management of Bank of Ceylon) hands over the main sponsorship cheque to Air Commodore Sanjaka Wijemanne Chairmen motor Racing Committee, during the media briefing held yesterday at SLAF headquarters and also in the picture are K.P. Anandanadesan – Assistant General Manager – Marketing, and, Wing Commander Thushara Sirimanne – Secretary of SLAF Motor Racing.
