89th ABA Men & Women Nationals Boxing Championships

Organized by the ABA for the 89th consecutive year, the National Championships will commence on the 9th December at 4.00pm, continuing for five days from 10th to 14th December 2014 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium Colombo.

The combat this year will comprise of tri forces, Police, affiliated clubs of MAS and schools clubs. The meet is open to all male & female boxers over 18 years, with an upper age limit of 40. Only those boxers who have already qualified to take part in major meets before or Winners/Runners up at the ABA Novices, Intermediates, Stubbs Shield and winners of Junior Nationals are qualified to take part in this meet.

The most successful boxer from of last year’s Malith Prabashwara from Slimline will once again be a top contender at this year’s tournament too. Prabashwara, on the Tri Nation Boxing Tournament held this November at the Slimline Boxing arena will be a strong contending boxer for the Light Fly Weigh class this year while, KALU Shashikala of Air Force; last year’s women best boxer will also take part this year with great ambition of stealing the trophy for women this year as the previous.

The most awaited and thrilling bout will be between current unbeaten national champion Gayan Jayaweera of Slimline and WRT Weerakkody of Army in the Bantam Weight under 56kg category. The enthusiasts of the sport will no doubt be able to look forward to a keenly contested fight. National tournaments such as these will ensure that the much needed experience is imparted and the skills are honed for more victories at international levels. Been the most scientific boxer last year PVDD Saparamadu of Slimline will enter the battle ring with the intention of securing his title in Light weight division.

Hopefuls for gold medals will be representing the Slimline, MAS Southern, Army, Navy , Air Force , Police, Unichela , Silueta , Linea Boxing Clubs as well as schools, Vidyartha, Seevali, Vidaratha SC, and Royal College.
