Thurstan College emerged victorious in the 62nd Battle of the Brothers, retaining the Blackham Wijewardene Trophy by defeating their arch-rivals Isipathana College in a thrilling encounter at the Sinhalese Sports Club.
Isipathana College resumed their second innings on the third morning, with Thurstan holding a slight lead of just over 50 runs. Isipathana College second batting stint didn’t gett off to the best of the starts.
Sethru Fernando took matters into his own hands with his off-spin, wasting no time in breaking the brief opening stand set by the Isipathana openers. He went on to strike five times, sending the Isipathana top order back to the dugout and leaving Isipathana in disarray.
Fernando, alongside his off-spin partner Vihas Thewmika, made life difficult for the Isipathana batters, bowling them out for a mere total of 104 runs. With that, Thurstan College needed only 51 runs to retain the Blackham Wijewardene Trophy.
Thurstan College openers wasted no time in reaching the little target of 51 runs. Thurstan’s Dinal Induwara blasted 38 off just 29 deliveries. Thurstan College wasted only 8 overs to the game to bed.
