6 youngsters in track and field at Commonwealth youth games 2017

Six young track and field athletes will be part of the 28 strong contingent that will represent Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas. The Island will also be represented in Rugby 7s, Swimming, Boxing and Judo.

All event times in SL standard time.

Navodya Sankapala – Boys 400m Hurdles

Commonwealth Youth Games 2017

Navodya Sankapala has been a stand out athlete in the local scene as he managed to qualify for the world youth championship at the Junior Nationals held at Diyagama with a time of 53.72. However, a decision was made to get Sankapala to the Commonwealth Youth Games instead of the World Youth Championship as he has a better medal chance in the Bahamas.

Pramod Perera – Boys Long Jump

Commonwealth Youth Games 2017Maristonian Pramod was unlucky to miss out on qualification to the IAAF world youth event as he was 2cm short of the qualification mark. 17 year old will be yearning for a medal in this all important meet by achieving his personal best.

16-year-old Sachini Divyanjali is the only athlete that will be representing Sri Lanka in two events as she is set to compete in both Girls 100 & 200m. Crowned as the best athlete in the recently concluded Western Province school games Divyanajali impressed with a time of 25.40secsin the 200m

Kavindya Thathsarani – Girls 400m Hurdles

Hurdler Thathsarani will be one of three hurdlers that make up the Sri Lankan athletic contingent to the commonwealth youth games. with a personal best time of 01:04.10secs 16-year-old Thathsarani is the leading athlete in her age category.

Sandumini Bandara – Girls 400m

Commonwealth Youth Games 2017Sandumin Bandara has represented Sri Lanka in a number of International meets already at the age of 16 and will be looking for her experience to take her thought to a Commonwealth medal in the Bahamas. With a personal best of 57:30 secs in the Girls 400m Bandara is in the range of a podium finish if she betters her best performance to date.

Sheshan Kariyawasam – Boys 110m Hurdles

The hurdler from Darley Road Sheshan Kariyawasam was adjudged the best athlete at the recently concluded Sir John Tarbet Senior meet. Shehan ran a new meet record of 14:06secs in the 110m hurdles to clinch the best athlete award and was also a member of the team that represented the country at the Asian Youth Athletic Championship.
