The Athletic Association Sri Lanka will be sending a contingent of 8 athletes to participate in the Thailand Open Athletic Championship which will be held from the 12th – 15th June.
The eight member squad will include four male and four female athletes. Three Sri Lankan athletes will be making their debuts in national colours at this event.
Up and coming athlete, Jaffna’s vaulting queen Anitha Jegatheeswaran, who is the National record holder in the pole vault has been handed her first International event after an impressive, record breaking run since last December. Anitha’s Coach C. Subashkaran has also been appointed as the coach of the team and will be travelling with the team to Thailand.
National record holder in the women’s hammer throw Ayesha Maduwanthi has also received her maiden call up to represent the country in the international arena. This is also the first time a female Hammer thrower has been picked to represent the country in an international tournament. Maduwanthi has broken the national record 04 times in the recent tournaments and richly deserves the international experience.
Soldier Ajith Karunathilaka is the other National record holder who will be debuting for the country and ends a lengthy absence of a decathlon athlete for the country on the international stage. Karunathilaka has amassed a total of 6837 points in the decathlon to clinch the National record and will be aiming at impressing in the Thailand open and gaining the attention of the national bodies.
