2nd Annual Sri Lanka Schools Nationals

128

On the 12th, 13th and 14th of September, 16 schools will compete to assert their dominance over school level rowing in Sri Lanka at the 2nd annual Schools Nationals.

The Schools Nationals Regatta, which is to be held at the Colombo Rowing Club, was started last year to provide a forum in which girls and boys in school can strive for supremacy amongst one another as opposed to competing with other institutions such as rowing clubs and the forces. This regatta not only encourages more schools to enter the rowing arena, but also nurtures competitive rowing at a school level and seeks to continuously uplift the standard of these young oarsmen and oarswomen.

There will be 4 age groups in both the Men’s and Ladies’ categories. The events in the Under 20, Under 18 and Under 16 categories will be – single sculls, double sculls, pairs and coxed fours, over a 1km long course. The Under 14 category, which allows young and eager athletes the opportunity to compete and kick-off their rowing careers, will compromise of 2 events over a 500 meter course – single sculls and double sculls.

The regatta is to start at 9am on Thursday morning, so drop by the rowing club between Thursday and Saturday to cheer your school on! It will be three whole days of vigorous racing as 300 athletes from 16 different institutions battle it out on the waters of the Beira, each one hoping to emerge victorious and bring glory to their own school.
