S.Thomas’ College and Royal College ended up drawing the 20th Royal-Thomian Hockey Encounter nil all at the Astro Turf last evening (7). S.Thomas College managed to retain the Orville Abeynaike Memorial Trophy as a result.
The 1st XI match was started under clear skies at the Colombo Astro Hockey turf with Royal aiming to regain and their opponents aiming to retain the shield. The stadium was filled with the double blues and golden blue spectators.
The first half of the match saw aggressive intent from both teams who used different tactics but neither team was able to convert possession into points. However S.Thomas’ College managed to build some pressure on Royal College in the first 30 minutes of play, while testing the defense to the brink with a few fast plays.
Both teams had several chances to draw first blood, but couldn’t score in the first half.

In the second half, both schools continued their attacking game, desperate to get on the board. In the latter half of the game S.Thomas’ College managed to win a few useful corners and put some intense pressure on the goalkeeper of the Royal College but the Blue and Gold defense stood tall and denied them. The Royalists had a chance of their own in the dying stages of the game but were unable to make the most of the opportunity.

With the game going into extra time, the tiring youngsters tried hard to get past the opposition’s respective defenses, but to no avail as the game ended scoreless.
S Thomas’ retained the shield, having won the encounter last time around.
