The Sri Lanka squad for the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships unfortunately failed to reach Colombia in time for Long Jumper Hirusha Hashen to compete in the qualification round of the Men’s Long Jump.

The Championships started on 1st August in Cali, Colombia and three Sri Lankan athletes were set to compete on day 1; Tharushi Karunaratne, Hirusha Hashen and Kaweesha Bandara were supposed to participate in the first rounds of the Women’s 800m, Men’s Long Jump and Men’s 110m Hurdles.
However, Karunaratne couldn’t leave with the first batch of athletes due to a delay in the Visa process and so could not compete in the 800m event. She will however be aiming to run the Women’s 400m heats later today.
Unfortunately, Hirusha Hashen also failed to make it to the competition on time as a result of a flight delay. The squad’s journey to Cali was earlier put in jeopardy as officials reportedly failed to secure travel arrangements for the athletes in a timely manner. After nearly 50 hours of travelling, young Hirusha Hashen has nothing to show for the trip, with the event already underway by the time he landed in Cali.
Meanwhile Hurdler Kaweesha Bandara clocked 14.18 seconds and finished 6th in the heats of 110m hurdles, where he reported had to compete straight after landing in Cali.

Today, two more Lankan athletes are scheduled to compete. Tharushi Karunaratne and Hurdler Amesha Hettiarachchi will be participating in 400m and 400m Hurdles heats respectively.
