The inaugural Josephian-Thomian Regatta will be held on 10th August 2019 at the Colombo Rowing Club at 2.30 pm. The event is organized by the Joint Rowing Committee of St. Joseph’s College – Colombo and S. Thomas’ College – Mount Lavinia.
St. Joseph’s College and S. Thomas’ College boast a rich heritage of rowing excellence and are two leading schools in the rowing fraternity. The schools have produced champion crews that have gone on to dominate the national sporting arena. It is fitting therefore that these two schools should come together to compete with each other in one of the most widely anticipated championship encounters, to showcase their rowing excellence prowess.
The regatta will comprise nine events in the categories of total, fours, pairs, coxed fours, coxless pairs, double sculls and sculls.

The Josephian – Thomian Regatta will be an annual fixture in the rowing calendar and is tipped to rival in prestige and popularity the Royal- Thomian regatta. The event promises to attract the fans and oarsmen of the rowing community of the country at the prestigious Colombo Rowing Club.
Rowing as a sport has grown rapidly in popularity in Sri Lanka since the introduction of the sport to the country by the British. Schools rowing emerged in the country for the first time in the 1950s and both St. Joseph’s College, Colombo and St. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia have invested significantly in providing aspiring oarsmen with the equipment and opportunities needed to excel in the sport.
