St. Joseph’s College Wennappuwa faced off against St. Anthony’s College Wattala in the inaugural Battle of the Golden Blues on day one today (26th April) at the P. Saravanamuttu International Cricket Stadium.
In the scorching conditions of Colombo, St. Joseph Vaz College skipper Vishwa Rajapaksha won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Vazian opening bowlers led by Tharindu Eshan dismissed Anthonian top-order pretty cheaply. The Antonians found themselves in a spot of bother with five wickets down for 77 runs.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man, Amitha Sandeepa took the Anthonians out of trouble by scoring an unbeaten century which will be remembered in the years to come. Amitha hit thirteen boundaries and a six in his innings. Vihanga Rashmitha also contributed with a valuable 38 runs to take the total to a competitive 236 runs.
The pick of the bowlers for St. Joseph Vaz College was Dominic Fernando, Fernando ended up with figures of 4 for 12. His breakthroughs at regular intervals held back the run flow of the Anthonians although Amitha Sandeepa was batting out of his skin.
At stumps for day one, St. Joseph Vaz College had batted 11 overs and was 41 runs for the loss of no wickets. An exciting day of play awaits us tomorrow for day 2.
