17th Asian Games – Day 5

Today is the 05th day of the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. It was partly cloudy through the day.

 

In Men’s Hockey, China handed Sri Lanka their third consecutive defeat, coasting to a 6-0 victory in the Pool B game. Sri Lanka fought hard to limit the scoring to just 1 goal in each of the first three quarters but conceded 3 goals in the final period of play. Sri Lanka will be disappointed not being able to sound the Boards even once during the three outings. The last match against Oman will be played on the 25th.

Sri Lanka Ladies made their bow in Cricket at Asian Games today. In the 2nd Quarter Final,Skipper Chamari  Atapattu won the toss and elected to bat.Helped by a timely 76 run 4th wicket stand between opener Lasanthi Madushani who top scored with 43 and Chamari Polgampola compiling 33, the Sri lankan lasses totaled 149/5 in the alloted 20 overs.The opponents helped by way of some sloppy fielding. In reply Hong Kong China got off to a reasonable start with a 26 run opening partnership. Poor running between wickets accounted for 3 runouts while Shashikala Siriwardene picked up 4/13 as Hong Kong China were bowled out for 67 in 17.2 overs.they lost 10 wiickets for the addition of 41 runs to give Sri Lanka an 82 run win .The semifinal encounter is scheduled for the day after tomorrow. Coach, Jeewantha Kulathunga and Manager, Roshan Iddamalgoda were happy with the first outing.The Men’tem led by Lahiru Thirimaanneis expected to arrive tommorrow.Coaches Romesh Kaluvitharana & Champaka Ramanayake together with Manager Jayantha Seneviratne will accompany the team.

Lakshan Gunawardene will compete in Men’s Windsurfing tommorrow in the first race with 6 others. Navy Captain Senaka Seneviratne will assist him as Manager.

In Men’s Beach Volleybal,Sri Lanka’s No. 1 team of Pubudu Ekanayake and Asanka Kumara will be meeting China while the No. 2 pair of Jude Mahesh Perera and Wasantha Rathnapala will be up against Bangladesh.

China is leading the medal haul with 35 Golds. South Koreans have bagged 16 while Japan have won 15 Gold medals .
