The third and final day of the 120th Lovers’ Quarrel delivered high-quality cricket as both Mahinda College and Richmond College fought hard to force a result, but ultimately had to settle for a draw at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.
Richmond College, resuming their first innings at 144/8, showed great lower-order resilience to post 227 for 9 before declaring. Bevin Jayawardene anchored the innings with a composed 52, while Pubudu Mihiranga chipped in with a valuable 47. Nikil Jayaweera’s earlier contribution of 45 also proved vital in helping Richmond gain a narrow 10-run lead. Mahinda’s captain Kaveen Rukshan continued his superb all-round performance in the match, finishing with figures of 4 for 70, supported by Sadew Nethmina who picked up 2 for 24.
In response, Mahinda batted with positive intent in their second innings. Dulsith Darshana played a blistering knock of 82, while Senuka Danagamuwa added a quickfire 34 as Mahinda declared on 147 for 5 in just 41 overs. Thamindu Pradeeptha was the pick of the bowlers for Richmond with 3 for 10.
Chasing a target in fading light and with time running out, Richmond reached 23 for 1 before the match was called off, sealing a draw in the landmark 120th encounter.
While there was no winner on paper, both schools can take pride in the spirited cricket they displayed across all three days in this historic big match.
