The 120th Lovers’ Quarrel took center stage at the picturesque Galle International Cricket Stadium, being played for three days for the first time in history. Day one was cut short for only 73 overs due to unfriendly playing conditions.
Richmond College after winning the toos invited their long-lasting rivals Mahinda College, to bat first. Mahinda College didn’t have the best of starts to their innings losing 3 wickets for 64 runs. Skipper Kaveen Rukshan and Senuka Danagamuwa combined to put on a 89 run stand for the 6th wicket. Skipper Rukshan was very unfortunate to miss out on a well-deserved half century, falling just one run short of his half century. On the other hand Dangamuwa went on to make a superb half century, taking the Mahindians to a rather respectable score of 217 at the end of day’s play.
With the ball in hand, Richmond College bowlers were right on the mark throughout the innings. Off-spinner Pubudu Mihiranga was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 33. Malith De Silva also chipped in with 2 wickets for Richmond College.
