The 114th Battle of the North played between Jaffna Central College and St. John’s College, Jaffna continued today for day two at Jaffna Central College Grounds in Jaffna.
114th Battle of the North commences; St. John’s takes upper hand on day one
St. John’s College resumed day two on 118 runs for 3 wickets with the overnight batsmen Thiyagarajah and Dinoshan Theivendram remained unbeaten on 19 and 24 respectively. However, both batsmen could not last long at the crease as they were dismissed adding 38 more runs to the scorecard.
Vinojan Thiyagarajah made 27 runs off 79 balls with 5 fours while Dinoshan Theivendram stroked 44 runs off 70 balls including 5 fours. Sabesan Kamalapalan who bats at number 6, then joined Karishan Kuganesaran in the middle but they added only 17 runs to the total as the latter was dismissed by Vijayakanth Viyaskanth for just 5 runs.

At Lunch, the visitors were 197 runs for 6 wickets with Sabesan Kamalapalan remained unbeaten on 31 runs. Kamalapalan continued to impress with the bat after the lunch and put on a 55-run partnership with Abishek Anton for the 7th wicket.
Sabesan Kamalapalan stroked 43 runs off 121 balls with 4 fours while Abishek Anton contributed with a knock of 25 runs off 67 balls including 3 fours. After their dismissals, the number ten batsman Anton Saraan built a 24-run partnership with Piranavan Sivarajah (18) for the ninth wicket and a 37-run partnership with Vithushan Yogathas (7) for the last wicket guiding the visitors to a respectable total of 291 runs.

Anton Saraan remained unbeaten on 24 runs off 88 balls with 3 fours for St. John’s College. The left-arm spinner Theesan Vithusan was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts as he grabbed a 5-wicket haul for 79 runs. In addition to that, Sri Lanka U19 capped Vijayakanth Viyaskanth picked up 3 wickets for 80 runs.
After the Tea break, Jaffna Central College began their second innings 141 runs behind and expected to showcase a better batting display this time around but they continued to struggle with the bat as they lost 3 quick wickets for 26 runs.
The number three batsman Sansajan Matheeswaran and number five batsman Inthujan Balarupan were doing the rescue act as they built an unbeaten 25-run partnership for the fourth wicket at the close of play on day two.
Matheeswaran remained not out at the crease after scoring 15 runs off 49 balls with a four while Balarupan made an unbeaten 13 runs off 25 balls with 2 fours. Dinoshan Theivendram impressed with the ball picking up 2 scalps for 8 runs in 5 overs while Anton Saraan took a wicket for 22 runs for St. John’s College.
The hosts still trail by 90 runs with 7 wickets in hand and they will have to bat much better on day three to set a reasonable target for the visitors.
