3000 athletes to compete in Nestomalt mini-Marathon

Nearly 3000 entries have reached the Sri Lanka Athletics Association for the Nestomalt Mini-Marathon and Health run that will be held on the 22nd January. The event is to be held in celebration of the centenary festivities of Sri Lanka Athletics.

Both races will commence from Diyatha Uyana in Kotte as early as 06:00am.

The event has been organized by Sri Lanka Athletics and has been proudly sponsored by Nestomalt. There will be 15 runners from South Asia in addition to the 145 men and 36 women from Sri Lanka.

The overseas athletes are from India (4), Maldives (4), Nepal (4) and Bangladesh (3) according to the associations’ Vice President G L S Perera.

The 5km Nestomalt Health Run has attracted over 2700 participants including school children, the SLA official said. The race will take the route from Parliament Road, Palam Thuna Junction, Battaramulla Junction and return to Diyatha Uyana.

The 21km Mini-Marathon will go through Ethul Kotte Junction, Sirikotha, Pagoda Road, Nugegoda Supermarket junction, Nugegoda, High Level Road, Maharagama, Pannipitiya, Borella Road, Thalawathugoda Junction, Battaramulla Junction and back to Diyatha.

Total prize money of 1,150,000 will be on offer for winners of the mini marathon, according to SLA President President Major General Palitha Fernando.

The winners (Men and Women) will be awarded 200,000/- each, the Runners up 150,000/-, 100,000/- for the third-place winners, 75,000/- for fourth and 50,000/- each for 5th placed finishers.
