As the inter-international basketball tournament continued during the weekend Gateway College Kandy faced off against Elizabeth Moir whilst British School and Gateway College Colombo played CIS Kandy and Lyceum Ratmalana respectively. Here’s a look at what happened.

Gateway College Kandy vs. Elizabeth Moir Senior School

GCK drew 1st blood in the game with some good rebounding skills and held the early momentum in the game as Disura dished out a couple of shots from the perimeter assisted by some well-placed passes. Yet Elizabeth Moir converted a few fast breaks into scoring opportunities and led the game by three points going into lemons.

The scoring in the second half was opened up by Elizabeth Moir with a well-timed alley-hoop. It seemed that the lads from Kandy had utilized the break well as they switched up their defensive strategies to a half court press and chose to drive in rather than going for mid-range jumpers.

It was team play for GCK that gave them the four-point difference at full time. Converting almost all the shooting fouls into points put them up ahead the game. Moir`s buzzer beater shot from downtown wasn’t enough to save them in this intense game.

The coach of the winning team shared his thoughts with ThePapare.com “Our team comprises mostly of Indians and it’s difficult for them to adapt to the game settings here but they played well today, unlike yesterday. Moir also gave a tough fight but our defensive side was strong which won us the game.”

British School, Colombo vs. Colombo International School Kandy

CISK got off to a brilliant start as they drove to the basket, toppling the defense to score first. They followed this with a shot from downtown to take an early lead. BSC struggled to get past the CISK defense and convert their shots as they lost possession countless times.

As the second half began, the lads from Kandy switched to a full court press to increase the pressure as the steals and fast-breaks in their favour kept flowing. BSC just could not keep up with the pace of the game.

Although British School had the home court advantage it proved to be of no use as the two teams were in two different leagues as CISK breezed past them to an easy victory.

The CISK coach shared his thoughts about the match with ThePapare.com “We expected a tough game today since British School lost to Lyceum only by one point where as we lost by 2 but I think we performed better than how we did yesterday which is why we won this match.”

Gateway College, Colombo vs. Lyceum International School –  Ratmalana

Gateway dominated this game right from the jump ball start as Lyceum could only manage to get 6 points past the tight defense of GCC in the 1st half.

Half-time: Gateway College – 35 Lyceum International School Ratmalana – 06

Although it seemed like an easy win for GCC they did not ease up until the final whistle was blown, giving it their all to win by the biggest margin possible. It was clear that there was a mismatch between the skills of the two teams, allowing Gateway to take the win like it was a walk in the park.
