The stage is set for the 135th ‘Battle of the Blues’ as the much awaited Royal-Thomian Cricket encounter is set to light up the month of March once again.
After a grueling display of sheer determination last year, the boys from Reid Avenue managed to break a six year hoodoo to claim the coveted D.S. Senanayake Memorial Shield under the captaincy of left arm spinner Devind Pathmanathan.
All roads lead to the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC) on the 13th, 14th and 15th of March as these two hallowed institutions continue to make history, as the ‘Battle of the Blues’ is undoubtedly one of the most awaited sporting extravaganzas in the Sri Lankan calendar.
This year the organizing committee has added a new dimension introducing a new gold ‘toss coin’ and also an official Royal-Thomian logo to enhance the value of this event.
The history of the Royal-Thomian is matched by very few, being the second oldest uninterrupted cricket series in the world which was not even halted for World War. Older than even the Ashes Series between Australia and England, the Royal-Thomian magnifies the importance of camaraderie and sportsmanship as it draws crowds from all over the world in the spirit of cricket.
From humble beginnings;
The roots of this age old tradition goes back to 1877 when Mr. Ashley Walker, an assistant to the Principal of Colombo Academy (subsequently renamed Royal College) took the initiative to organize an annual encounter with S.Thomas’ as he believed that school spirit and sportsmanship could be established through inter-collegiate cricket. His suggestion received full cooperation by the Sub-Warden of S.Thomas’, Rev.T.F. Falkner who himself was a Cambridge Blue in Cricket. The first recorded match was played on 15th,16th,17th, July 1879 commencing at 4pm each day at Galle Face Green. It was said that the two teams rowed across the Beira Lake in boats to Galle Face Grounds, the present premises of the Taj Samudra Hotel.
Colombo Academy won the inaugural encounter by 56 runs. The year 1880 marked the first students-only encounter where the Colombo Academy was led by J.W De Silva while F.W. Mc Donnell was the captain of S.Thomas’. The Academy emerged victorious once again, this time by 62 runs.
The Royal-Thomian is contested for the prestigious D.S Senanayake Shield which was first presented in 1928. D.S Senanayake who later became the first prime minister of independent Sri Lanka represented S.Thomas’ cricket team in 1901 and 1902 while his two sons Dudley & Robert Senanayake also played in the Royal-Thomian for S.Thomas’.
Many famous cricketers and leaders have been a part of this battle. Political figures such as the former President of Sri Lanka, – HE J.R Jayawardene, , Sir John Kotalawela, P.B Bulankulama along with cricketers such as B.R Heyn, Ranjan Madugalle, Asantha De Mel, Sudath Pasqual, Jayantha Amerasinghe, F.C De Saram, Churchillv(C.H ) Gunasekara, C I Gunasekara,Donald Rutnam, Kusal Janith Perera, Kithuruwan Vithange have been some of the more prestigious Royals.
Apart from the Senanayake family, talents of P. Saravanamuttu, A.F Molamure, Michael Tissera, Anura Tennakoon, Bradman Weerakoon, Duleep Mendis, Guy de Alwis, Ken de Alwis, Saliya Ahangama, Kaushik Amalean, Kapila Wijegunawardene, Jeewan Mendis, Kaushal Silva have decorated S.Thomas’
The tally stands at 34 wins for each side while 66 matches have ended in draws. The highest team score for the Royalists stands at 432/7 dec in 2006 while the highest for the Thomians is 411 all out in 2009. Royalist Sumithra Warnakulasuriya’s 197 in 1980 remains as the series record for the highest individual score in an inning while Duleep Mendis’s 184 in 1972 is the highest from the Thomian camp. The best bowling performance in an inning is credited to Thomian Fred Thomasz for taking 8 wickets for 3 runs in 1884.

The 134th encounter was conquered by the Royalists as the prestigious shield made its way back to Reid Avenue after a lapse of 6 years. Royal was led by 4th year coloursman Devind Pathmanathan while 3rd year coloursman Javed Bongso captained the Thomians. The decision to field upon winning the toss was was positive for Royal as their bowlers managed to shoot out the Thomians for 192 runs.
Devin Jayasinghe top scored with 74 for S Thomas while fast bowler Chamika Karunaratne ended with amazing bowling figures of 5 for 55. The match was interrupted by rain on the first day when the Royalists were 11 for no loss in their first inning.
The Royalists scurried their way to make 260 run for 5 wickets but rain interrupted giving the Thomians hope. Sampath de Silva and Milan Abeysekera registered half centuries for Royal that help propelled the Royal into a healthy first innings lead and Royal declared early putting the Thomians to bat for the second time. Royal’s Chamika Karunaratne’s rampage continued as the Thomians were bowled out for a mere 132 runs. Royal reached the target of 65 losing just 3 wickets. Chamika Karunaratne was man of the match for his 9 for 87.
2013/2014 – Season Recap
Royal remain ‘unbeaten’ this season
Royal College played 16 games for the season registering two wins, against St. John’s College Jaffna and their rivals Trinity College, Kandy. They remain unbeaten in the season while the remaining drawn games produced seven first inning victories. Fresher Randev Pathirana is the top scorer for the season with 870 runs while left arm leg spinner Devind Pathmanathan lead the wicket takers with 40 dismissals under his belt.
S. Thomas’ better Royal having three outright wins
S.Thomas’ played 17 matches for the season registering three outright wins against Prince of Wales, Dharmapala College and President’s College. They also have seven first innings wins including Thurstan College, Wesley College, Nalanda College and Trinity College while losing to Richmond College.
Royal Field a Mixture of Experience and Youth
The lads from Reid Avenue comprising both experience and young blood, will be spearheaded by five coloursmen.
‘Multi-Talented’ Chamika Karunarathne to Captain
Right arm fast bowler and 3rd year coloursman Chamika Karunaratne will be the first specialized fast bowler to captain Royal after 10 years. Last year, his fearsome bowling dismantled the Thomian line up, leading up to a Royal victory. He will be a key component in the Royal bowling attack and a glaring threat to the opposition. His experiences in the Sri Lanka U19 and U17 setup will also stand him well.
Right arm seamer and third year coloursman Anupa Tillekaratne will be vice captain, and Royal will undoubtedly have the support of last year’s winning captain Devind Pathmanathan who has been an inspirational figure on and off the field. Pathmanathan will be playing his 5th Royal-Thomian this year and has tons of experience, and is also currently the highest wicket taker in the team.
Second year coloursman Hashen Ramanayake will also return to the team after his exploits in the U19 World Cup. Ramanayake is no stranger to the Thomians, especially after his swashbuckling century in the Mustang’s Trophy last year. Second year coloursman Harith Samarasinghe will also look to contribute this year. His fielding performance last year proved to be instrumental in bringing back the shield to Reid Avenue last year.

Madushan Ravichandrakumar leads the ‘School by the Sea’
4th year coloursman Madushan Ravichandrakumar will rally his troops to avenge last year’s defeat. Having scored 500 runs and taken over 30 wickets this season, Ravichandrakumar will look to lead from the front to bring back the D.S. Senanayake Shield back to S. Thomas’ College.
Thilaksha Sumanasiri will prove to be a key player
Madushan will look to the vastly experienced Sumanasiri who also toured with the Sri Lanka U19 World cup squad to the UAE. Sumanasiri has an average of 88.00 this season, having scored two centuries (146,151) and a half century as well in the five games he has managed to play for S. Thomas’ College.
‘Top Order and Bowling Department’
Lahiru Opatha will most probably open the batting for the Thomians, while all-rounder Helakamal Nanayakkara is also a strong option to look towards. Both these players have amassed 500 runs this season.
‘Left Arm/Right Arm Bowler’ – Tharindu Rathnayake
Fresher Tharindu has been a revelation for the Thomians, and his unique ability of being able to bowl both left arm leg spin and right arm off spin is able to bamboozle many batsmen. Having taken 60 scalps this season, Tharindu will be a key figure in the Thomian bowling department. Ravindu Thilakarathne will be another player to watch out for having taken 40 wickets this season, while fast bowlers Sahan Wijesinghe and Akthab Cader have bagged over 30 plus wickets each as the Thomians will field a strong bowling setup.
Though S.Thomas’ boasts of 9 coloursmen on paper, a couple of them have underperformed and freshers including Tharindu Rathnayaka, hard hitting allrounder Sachitha Jayathilaka and Lahiru Opatha have made a strong statement for a place in the starting eleven in the 135th Battle of the Blues.
Dinesh Kumarasinghe takes up Coaching Duties once again
S.Thomas’ will be coached by Mr. Dinesh Kumarasinghe who took over after last year’s loss and is in his second stint at the School by the Sea. In his first stint he coached from 1988 to 2003 where he guided the team to three Battle of the Blues victories in ’88, ’97 and ’99.
Royal will look to depend on their strike bowlers Chamika and Pathmanathan, and will be hopeful that the freshers Randev and co. put up some good batting performances to help their cause.
The Thomians on the other hand will definitely be dependent on T. Sumanasiri who has been quite a consistent performer this season, and would relish the chance of playing at the usually batting friendly SSC. Like last year, it is the fielding that could win you games, and that will be an important factor that both teams will look to note. Tharindu Rathnayake will be an interesting player to watch, as Sri Lanka continues to produce the most ‘extra-ordinary’ bowlers in the world.
