Helika Adhikary of Royal College and Fathmath Deema Ali of Royal Institute Colombo were awarded ‘Most Valuable Player’ in the Boys’ and Girls’ category respectively at the SLIIT GOSSIMA 2016, All Island Table Tennis Championship.
Helika won the Novices and Intermediate Boys Singles while Fathmath won the U15 and U18 Girls’ Singles events.
Helika defeated Chathura Pamodya of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda 11/07 – 04/11 – 11/01 in the Novices Men’s Singles final.
Helika won the first set after a close tussle but Pamodya bounced back to win the 2nd comfortbaly. However Helika showed his class as he won the 3rd set only giving away one point.
In the Intermediate Men’s Singles final Helika defeated Oshadhi Kottahachchy of Kothalawala Defense University 09/11 – 11/05 – 11/06.
Helika narrowly lost the first set but eased his way through to win the important final two sets.
In the U15 Girls’ Singles final Fathmath Deema Ali defeated Hiruni Inoshi of Janadhipathi Balika, Nawala 11/04 – 11/08.
Fathmath had a comfortable first set and although Hiruni gave a good fight in the 2nd set it was little too late to deny Fathmath.
Hiruni and Fathmath met again in the U18 Girls’ Singles final and it looked like Hiruni would avenge her U15 final defeat when she won the closely contested 1st set 09/11. But Fathmath elevated her game to win the 2nd and 3rd sets 11/02 – 11/05.
U15 Boys’ Singles final was won by Kavindu Kalhara of Dharmaloka College, Kelaniya defeating Thumal Adhikary of Royal College 11/09 – 11/04.
U18 Boys’ Singles Final was won by Mahith Jayasumana of Lyceum International, Gampaha defeating Achira Abhilash of Lyceum International Wattala 11/07 – 11/06.
