Gayan wins bronze medal

Gayan Jayaweera won a Bronze Medal in the 60kg category at the 36th Tammer International Invitation Boxing Championship organized by the European Boxing Confederation from 18-23 November at Tampere in Finland.

Over seventeen countries participated in this championship with 70 boxers. Gayan Jayaweera and Thiwanka Ranasinghe represented Sri Lanka under the guidance of Formetta Martos, their Cuban Coach.

The tournament was conducted in 10 official men’s light weight categories according to AIBA rules.

International Olympic Style Boxing Tammer Tournament is held annually at the legendary Pyynikki Sports Hall Tampere in Finland. The legacy of Tammer Tournament started in the fall 1977 in Tampere and the tournament has been held every year since then, except during the years 1981, 1993 and 2000 when Tampere hosted men’s European or World Championships.

Tammer Tournament is internationally well known, and is a high standard boxing tournament. During the 30 plus year Tammer history the tournament has built a reputation as one of most respected Olympic style boxing tournament in the world.

In 1977 the very first Tammer Tournament hosted boxers from five countries in addition to the Finnish; others being fighters from Norway, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Canada and Germany. The highest number of participating countries was seen in 1997 when boxers from 35 countries fought for the Tammer medals. During the first years of the Tammer Tournament the participating teams were mostly city and clubs teams from Europe.
