Bens-Joes settle for a draw 

St.Josephs College took on St.Benadicts College in their match played at Kotahena yesterday. Joes taking first lease of the wicket took charge and made a commanding 300 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.

 The duo of enrich Silva and Jaan Jayasinghe did it again for the visitors top scoring with 56 and 57 respectively. It was for the second time in a row the pair batted in tandem to bring their team to a respectable total. Last week both of them put on a massive 172 run stand against the Thomians in Mount Lavinia. Both these batsmen crossed over the fifty run mark for the second time scoring 72 and 75 runs respectively. For the Benadictines bowler Eranga Ratnayake picked up four wickets for 109 runs.

Bens in their first innings finished the day with 103 runs on the board with half of their side back in the hut, but thanks to a fighting 77 from Dinusha Wanigasuriya and a 71 from Sandun Sampath the home side finished off their batting with a respectable total of 265 runs all out. Rosco Tathil was the main wrecker for the visitors grabbing a ‘fifer’ for 64 runs.

Joes in their second outing were shot out for 135 runs with bens bowler Dilshan Perera finishing off with 7 wickets for just 25 runs. It was a spending bowling performance by the Benadictines. The Josephian batting line up however lost focus and played the penalty.

Mahanamians take the Thora’s to the sword

Mahanama College were on the front foot from day one dismissing the Thomians for 172 runs. The home side were at one point tottering at 60 for the loss of 6 wickets before the Peiris double of wickek keeper batsman Sachin Peiris and all-rounder Lalindra  Peiris put the Thomians to a respectable total. The former scored a patient half century and was kept in good company by Lalindra who made 30 runs.

Mahanama College made their intentions clear from the start of the innings closing day one at an impressive 98 runs for the loss of no wickets in just 18 over’s. it was an aggressive batting display by the Mahamana openers Randika Welikannage and Lahiru Weerakoon who scored 77 and 65 respectively. Chamod Pathirana ended with match figures of 4 wickets for 86 runs and was the most successful bowler for the Thomians.

Thomians in their second innings scored 98 runs for 2 wickets when play was stopped.

Anandian pin down POW but fails to deliver the killer blow

Ananda College Colombo came out with a brilliant all round performance to take major honors against the Prince of Wales team. Ananda College batting first were able to muster up 219 runs for 9 wickets with Udesh Nadiranga top scoring with 40 runs for the home team.  The Ananda batsmen though getting starts failed to kick on and make a big one.

POW were 17 for the loss of 1 wicket at the end of proceeding in day one. Second day the home team exerted a lot of pressure to bring down the Prince of Wales batsmen to 136 runs all out, thanks to a splendid bowling performance by Sachithra Perera who ended with 5 for 53 and Pasindu Madushan who finished with 4 for 26.

Ananda in their second innings scored 172 for 4.

Jaleel guides Trinity to first innings win

The Trinitians, thanks to a solid knock of 68 by under 19 world cup player Rushan Jaleel won the game against Maris Stella by three runs in their first innings. It was Maris Stella who batted first and they managed to get a substantial score of 260 all out. S.Silva scored the highest runs for the batting team scoring 60 runs. The star for the Trinitians with the ball was Chinthaka Gokula who bagged 7 wickets. The19 year old  right arm pace bowler had a brilliant spell restricting the Maris Stella batting to 260.

When Trinity took the field to bat, things did not go their way. Winning the match seemed very distant as they were 256 for the loss of 9 wickets. Right hand bat and Lionsman Rushan Jaleel managed to take the Trinitians past the opposition score with the help of Chinthaka Gokula who scored 35 added 97 runs for the ninth wicket.

Maris Stella batting for the second time managed to score 155 for the loss of 2 wickets. The highlight of the second innings was the half ton (59*) scored by under 19 youth player Angelo Jayasinghe.

Thurstan vs Mahinda match end in draw

The match between Thurstan College Colombo and Mahinda College Galle ended in a draw yesterday at the Thurstan grounds. Thurstan batting first managed to get only 124 which proved to be not enough at the start but they managed to bowl out the Galle side for 100 runs.

The first batsman to get to 1000 runs Shihan Kamileen was the highest scorer for Thurstan as he scored 43. Pramod Gajasinghe was the pick of the bowlers getting 3 wickets. Mahinda after being 85 for the loss of 8 wickets when play ended on the first day crashed to 100 all out. The match ended in a draw as the home team in their second essay scored 243 for the loss of 6 wickets. Javed Siyambalapitiya and Supun Navaratne made half centuries for the home team.

Nalanda win on first innings

The encounter between Nalanda college and Dharmaraja College on ended in a draw at the Campbell park grounds yesterday. Rajans going in to bat first scored 158 runs with Prathap de Silva scoring 33 runs. pick of the bowlers was captain and off spinner Dinuk Jayasinghe who bagged 3/30. His off spin partner Koshan Shanushka took 2/17.

When the home team came in to bat it was former captain Nipun Karunanayake who scored the highest. The left handed one down bat Nipuna scored 33 runs. Right hander Sineth Gunawardena, opener Gayan Medawatte and Suranga Tennekoon contributed to the scoring. The visitors batting for the second time made 201/8 and declared. Sanjaya Kalubowila scored a brilliant half century (70) well supported by first innings highest scorer Prath de Silva who scored 56 runs. Nipun Karunanayake shone with the ball this time with his right arm off spin grabbing 3 wickets.

The home team scored 50 for the loss of 2 wickets in their second innings with Nipun unbeaten on 43.
